Dirt roads draw me near
To a place once defined and clear
Years ago I owned this place
Before ego and greed led to disgrace
White oaks point my way
Words cannot express what I wish to say
A different time when life was good
Tree houses sequestered us in the wood
Kickball, fireflies, and stories untold
Drew innocent souls into the fold
Trust enjoyed and then complete
Before we learned how to compete
Accolades hide our inner self
Quiet memories linger on a shelf
Slowly we strip away our armor
To revisit youth’s panorama
Relieved of burdens carried for years
Hid our innocence and childhood tears
Dirt roads draw me home
To a place I called by own
Simple rules for simple times
Before pennies, nickels, quarters, and dimes
Open up my heart from sin
Oh my Lord, I’m home again
