Prairie dogs peer above their home
Hope to find a critter’s bone
Thirsty they suck on cacti
Careful not to pierce an eye
These desert creatures scamper to and fro
Before they return to their hole
Rattlesnakes hide under rock
To keep cool and bother not
But if frightened they won’t hesitate
To give you a bite from this venomous snake
Sidewinders make a straight line
Never wanting to be confined
Condors circle overhead
View a carcass already dead
Perhaps a mule lost its balance
And hit the rocks below in the distance
Fresh meat—a feast for sure
Entices the bird for a sudden detour
Desert life strikes a chord
Below the mesa inside a gorge
Prickly plants, insects, and reptiles
Make home here for a while
Do not disturb their habitat
And disrupt nature’s thermostat
