A romantic reflection back to 1941... And a sad event on the first night of the Blitz, here in my hometown of Hull in the UK..., which was the second most bombed city after London...8th May 1941...
Cornflower Blue
It Happened in the Cornfield
One wispy Summer's Day.
The cloudless sky of Cornflower Blue
Above me as I lay
Within your arms
So strong and firm
Cocooned my tender heart,
And you my love
So handsome,
Did vow we'd never part.
Our souls entwined that glorious day
In total loving bliss,
Now memory lingers painfully
On our final Goodbye kiss.
Your call for duty
Took you soon
Before we'd time to wed,
And memories of your final hours
Race madly in my head...
We pledged our love
That Summer's day,
Two lovers linked by fate,
And on this night of 'reminisce'
I stare down at the date...
The eighth of May in forty one
I lost my Love to war,
My dreams were gone
My future bleak
What was my life now for?
We'll meet again
I know it's true ,
And see our sky of Cornflower Blue..
The mists of time
Will never fade
My love for you my dear,
Though Seventy five years
Has passed since then
I'll always hold you dear...
Once more our day of Cornflower Blue,
Together we shall stay..
Entwined in bliss and Heart to Heart,
In Hallowed days of May .....
How beautifully you describe the love and the loss of those uncertain and tragic times! "I lost my love to war," and the sky of "cornflower blue," is evocative of both heartfelt grief and the bright promise of hope. So wonderful how you hold the sadness and yet hold on to hope as well. Beautiful!
I AM STILL REELING...AWASHED IN THE SPLENDID BEAUTY OF PREDESTINED, TIMELESS LOVE...PHRASES FALL TENDERLY FROM WITHIN THE WALLS OF BITTERSWEET MEMORIES, HELD CLOSE AND PROTECTED ALL THESE YEARS. THIS IS A KEEPER AND THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING, DIANA. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Diana, your poetry is always so lovely, the kind I enjoy reading and desperately wish I could write. The rhythm and rhyme are perfect, and the tenderness of it all touches my heart in a way that is indescribable. This piece makes me want to take my own love of nearly forty-nine years in my arms and hold onto her with all my strength for the short time we may have left as one. It has been awhile since I have read you, and what a joy it has been.
This would make a beautiful folksy ballad! So beautifully written and heart touching. It seems that a spirit from the past used you to relay this story......................a story of a love that never died.
It is not me Ron...it would make me ninety three now! It is based on many stories I have heard from my parents and Grandparents...but thank you for your kind words....
Diana...
Your poem is so poignant it nearly makes me cry. To think that all these years have gone by and you still remember that wonderful day before things turn so bad and you lost him to that terrible war.
Wow! As sweet and sentimental and tearful and uplifting a love poem as this youngster has read in a hundred years or more. Beautiful from beginning to end!
