A little girl in hand me downs, pushing an old pushchair frame...what are her life chances?

Poem Artwork

Little Mite...

Sweet little girl in hand-me-downs

her face and eyes so sad.

in shoes too large and coat too long

no sign of Mam or Dad...

Graffitied wall her backdrop

 no pleasant view in sight..

her life mapped out at tender age

poor lonely little mite...

Beautiful and touching poetry.
One never knows what happened to her. My bet is on a strong, compassionate woman who is taking care of many.

You painted a picture of a moment in time. A simple quiet, a small rhyme, and yet in closing a door you also leave it open. Good Poem. A rarity!

Oh my goodness Diana is that a photo of you when you were young? You are bringing back memories of my childhood. I used to be 6 when I took care of my sister and pushed a perambulator around with her in it, lol,
I understand your poem . Much love, xo

A poignant poem for a poignant photo. Who knows? She may have ended up a multimillionaire? But not likely.

This poem reminds me of my poem, Poignant. But I wrote the poem before I found the photo of Robert Kennedy in West Virginia.

These old pictures tell an amazing story in their own right, as does your fine poem. Hopefully the girl in the picture, now a woman, can look back with fondness and a smile as the girl she once was.

Little Mite...is an understated, but poignant little poem.

Your words and the picture itself causes us to wonder whatever happened to this little girl—which direction did her life take. Did she have any friends at all? We’re there siblings in her life? Was there anyone or anything at all to offer her love, compassion, or sensitivity? When she cried, was there anyone around to hear her. We could wonder a hundred things or more about this young girl, but in the end, all we can do is hope she met with a better life than what she appears to have here. This reminds me, too, about the classmate I wrote about sometime ago. At the time I wrote about her, I wondered then whatever happened to her. I have since learned that she passed away, but that is all that I know. Thank you, Diana, for the opportunity to look at others and wonder.

If this is an old picture, and she is already grown up, then
she is self-assured, kind, smart, gentle, and a veritable powerhouse
among her peers. She is the salt of the earth. I could pick her out of a crowd in less than a minute.

Having grown up in a family of nine children, handy me downs were a given as were home made clothes and clothes handed down from more affluent family and friends. Our toys were often more of imagination such as a wooden branch for a rifle when playing war, or cowboys and indians, cardboard was our toboggans in the winter and cardboard and plastic bread bags in our leaky shoes and boots meant we had dry feet.
This all being said...we were loved by our parents and of me and my siblings we all went on to have good lifes, no one became a drug addict, no one ended up in prison, or became a criminal or worst yet, God forgive a politician. I guess my point is it is not what we have as children so much that defines who we are in later life but those who guide us. Your poem definately makes one think and that is what a good writer should do.

Such a sweet poem. I wonder, too, what was her fate?
