“Hope Springs eternal in every human breast.”
Alexander Pope..

Poem Artwork

                                                  H O P E…

I awoke this morning fearful and heavy-hearted.
My gaze wandered lazily through the window
around my tired, dreary garden.
I registered Winter’s dregs,
bare lifeless branches, broken twigs, drabness..
an apt metaphor of my inner self,
my low state of mind.
Then suddenly, unexpectedly, I spied
a tiny wisp of blossom-
Vivid Yellow amongst the gloom,
so proud in its singularity,
unafraid, lighting the way….
My Heart suddenly lurched with inner recognition,
HOPE sprang eternal!
With fresh eyes I reviewed the landscape…
Strong green shoots on my beloved Lilac,
Firm healthy buds on the willowy Cherry,
regal Purple growth on the Elder.
In the furthest corner, a Butterfly bush clothed
heavily in glossy greenery
welcomed the bright almost Spring Sunshine.
A slight shift of perception, and my world
transformed magically before me..
Sunlight once more filled my room-
and deep within my Heart…

              “H O P E”…..

I can feel the shift by reading your words, from sad and tired to awakened, joyful, and energized. "With fresh eyes.." When our hearts lead the way, anything is possible. So glad for that flower and for hope to fill your heart.

I have never read a more beautiful welcoming to Spring. And so needed after all the turmoil. Thanks, Diana.

How tender is the night of winter how brilliant is the eve of spring, when you choose to look with hope in your eyes, flowers bloom in your heart and your garden dear poet. You always make me sigh at the end of your poetry, yay spring is almost here , wonderful !

Diana,

I think the reason I am so drawn to this piece is because it expresses the way I feel in its entirety—every line, every phrase, every word. We become burdened down with the problems we have to face from day to day when suddenly, without realizing it, we catch a glimpse of the things in life that offer us real meaning—a sense of well being—H O P E. I’m ready to see anything spring, even if it’s a sprinkling of bright yellow dandelions on a carpet of emerald. I love this, Diana . . . One of your best indeed!

That burst of yellow made me long for forsythia that grew abundantly in another life of mine in West Virginia. But we have yellow roses blooming right now because the weather has not been cold enough to fully extinguish them. Some hardy yellow chrysanthemums still bloom as though it were still fall and yellow pansies placed in the shade long for some sun so they can perk up and face it every morning.

It's always a good feeling when you suddenly feel that glimmer of hope just when you really need it. Good presentation, Diana, from beginning to end of this poem!

Diana, this is so uplifting! I felt myself brightening (well, after keenly identifying with the sogginess, the tired, dreary, drab, so well-described here) and then your use of “Vivid yellow…” was perfect in conveying the ‘waking up’ feeling, the first ‘awarenesses’ of new life energy. I love this line: “so proud in its singularity,”. This whole poem had me feeling the renewal myself, sitting here in the soaking Pacific Northwest forest. Thank you for the ‘virtual “…shift of perception,” ~~ the other Diana

I am a life-long pessimist in the 'Eeyore/Schopenhauer' mold and thus my natural philosophical inclination is to view 'hope' as one of the greatest enemies of human reason and intellectual thought (masquerading as it frequently does, under the the guise of 'religion').

Instead of deriving renewed religious joy and encouragement from such things as tiny buds and blossoms, as Springtime emerges once again, I view this (tiny, fragile buds of renewed life) as simply further evidence of Mother nature's eternal, primal wisdom and the ultimate ascendance of 'her' supreme omniscience over us terribly flawed and imperfect mortal (human) creatures (that 'she' must have inadvertently created in a loose moment).

However, there remains a part of me...all frusty philosophical sophormorisms aside...that absolutely delights in finding such evidence of natural perfection as you describe on late winter walks through the gaunt, bare-branched local park with my husky bitch. It reaffirms my conviction that Nature knows far more than the most convoluted human thinker and perhaps we all should pay MORE attention to her! Particularly at insane times like these that presently threaten to tear the world apart (e.g. 'Herr Putler' and his obsessive narcissistic megalomania of 'restoring' Russia's 'lost glory', et al).

Thank you for inserting this shining ray of (natural) sun into the gloom that perpetually enfolds us wretched mortals! Aloha nui loa, K2

Indeed, the symbol of the sudden emerging spring garden after the dregs of a long and tedious winter is heart-warming and as you say, full of hope. Let us all bask in its promise.

Yes, it is truly amazing that the one first flare of colour in the spring especially after a hard winter can perk us up more than any chemical known to man. Great write and greater hope that you have a wonderful spring and summer.

Good morning, Diana (here in SoCal) So they say: every cloud has a silver lining and your silver line is that one bloom...

Very lovely poem. Very lovely hopeful words.

Though the worlds clouds on this day are dark indeed, let us hope for the silver linings.

You have quite a diversity of flora in your yard. Must be a joy to see in full bloom. The imagery in this offers the reader an efficacious view through the writer's eyes. I like that. Thank God the sun rises, the seasons change, and hope and new growth reemerge. Thank you for sharing these honest insights. Peace... rlc
