It starts with a Poem © 2008 Michael Wells
It could start from a poem, I guess
I could write a million lines
And choose the ones I like
These days are showing me that anything can happen
And sometimes nothing happens
Sometimes I move
Sometimes I stay
I cannot imagine being sure of what I do
I walk on eggs and tightropes
I sway from side to side
I almost lose my grip
The crowd gasps
I cannot imagine being cool
Walking with a swagger
Or wearing a hat
Or even shades
Or being what you like
To think I am
I cannot be a politician
Too damn serious for me
How to buckle down and concentrate
On the problem at hand
Until you understand how to
Dodge the truth
Hide the truth
I cannot be a soldier
As if our lives are not tough enough
We invent the ultimate horror
And feed it to ourselves
A spoonful at a time
As if being right were any better
As if we were intelligent
Built in excuses to thin our population
Because it is just us, not them. It is us and them.
