Walking soft.  Remember?   Just knowing a small creature
is revving to shiver a branch.  Could be a squirrel will stretch
its sly, rubber-band frame to snag a nut,  ruffling
the forest floor just enough to give itself away.
Or a woodchuck pad its pad with a couple twigs.
Owl whooo-whooo camp-sounding whooos.  Chipmunk
mince out for air?   Fox for once misstep?    Shhhhhhhh.
Easy.  Heed the rustle of leaf one-upping leaf.  Fern
whispering myths behind laced fingers.  Jays,  finches,
and orioles need to note down.  Sometimes alarm,
but even magpies know there's a time to be quiet and listen
Each whisp of a decibel, each peep, squeak, warble
and muted foray into territory a smidge foul
a kind of miracle against the cacophony of town
and city.   Expressway, road, dock.   Unremitting
groan, grind, whir of The Machine.  Robot farms wheel
and wheel.  Tiptoeing.   I, too, remem ...rrrrrrEEEE

ENOUGH.  Got your smoke-free,  your vehicle-free,
your no-this, your no-that.  Surely manage racket-free.
A wood somewhere, a mountain.  Spot of sand .
where the far-off  creecree of  a shrimping gull
and the beat of one's heart – s o u l  m u s i c ? – is all
we hear?   One moment.   F-13  laptops, BlackBerries,

Wonderful write, Pea! Stop!! Breath, listen and smell. Every now and then when I can wrench myself from work I take a few days and go to the wilderness - Serengeti, Ngorongoro or such. Its so serene and peaceful there! One with nature! You can actually hear yourself breath!

God bless, Pea!

Sandie.

I will have fun reading this a few times, moving with the mind of the poet back and forth between communion with the serene, even potentially sublime, and cacophony of our too often too modern ways.

Such an original write and told exactly how it is.You took me there to that world of noise and rush and hussle and stress too(horrible place is it not?)I really and truly loved(in capitals LOVED!!!) the way you wrote this poem it is so fresh exciting and stands out and screams with originality. The contrast too was fabulous, the silence against the noise.I hear you.
Great work!
Best wishes always

kay.

I'm glad I stopped by and read this one, Pea; you're really in touch with nature in all of its magnificence. An excellent, thought provoking message to stop and smell the roses and take a much needed break from the insanity of "modern" living. Thank you, my friend, I'm saving this one!

(((HUGS))) and love, karla.

what i liked about this piece was the connection it showed between you and the natural world. your easy familiarity, wonderful usage of language and imagery mark you as a poetic soul, really and truly. it's a priviledge reading your work, poet.

Good example of how we tend to tie ourselves up in the techno sound of digital madness that has grown out of cyber space to attack us in our day to day lifes as well as our private escapes...if we let it. Great message here Phylis.

You capture the sounds of nature in this composition. Silence please as I think.

One of my favourite sounds is a fresh night wind wispering down the canyon !
You can almost hear the sound of creation in its wake.
This is a very expressive and original pen, that makes you value the sound of silence Pea !

We are a noisy species, aren't we? I remember being out in the New Mexico wilderness 40 miles from the nearest airport, and I could still hear a plane take off.

Can't take the racket, but we take it with us. I used to go camping a lot. Never understood people taking all their modern gadgets with them when TV, radio, stoves! Noice was what we wanted to leave behind. STOP! and breath! One the qualities I like about your writing, is that you put the reader right in the middle of it. I feel slightly insane after reading this. I think I'll go hide somewhere quiet. :-)
