Poem Artwork

       One Hour, Two

He makes his side
of the bed.
She makes hers.
A routine long ago
established.
He goes to let the dog out.
She straightens the pillow
on his side
then opens a closet
to fish out red
slacks
and a tee.
He is in the kitchen now
turning on coffee.
Forgot they could set
on automatic.

All the small acts
we repeat, reset,
repeat
don't matter
until
they
stop

.

Yes. We don't think about what we do sometimes until our world is turned upside down, and everything is shaken about. Hospital rooms do that. So does moving, making new friends, getting a new job. The unexpected can do it. Fall over the dog, wrench your knee. EREEEEyoooow. Ohoh. Nice job

The feelings of a lifetime together, the love, the care, the bittersweet; are so palpable, it brought tears of recognition to my eyes. This is a most touching and vulnerable rendition of love.

The daily routine goes on without notice until one day it no longer can and at that moment, we find that we knew comfort in that old rut of ours and that we really did appreciate that HE let the dog out and HE started our coffee. All of the little things that go into a couple's life become so important and so touching after our mate leaves us. Our life will never again be the same and we are forced to learn a different way that we never wanted to know. There is so much sadness in this offering, Pea, but you remind us all to take time to appreciate it all, because one day, it may all come tumbling down at our feet. I hope you are not writing this about your life, perhaps just an observation while waiting on a friend in a hospital.
Take care,
Sherry

Such a sadness about this write...very touching, sometimes we tend to forget how much we appreciate the little moments such as these when shared with our companion...very emotional write here my friend, makes one stop and think about the little things that our mate irritates us with, maybe we shouldn't complain but yet enjoy while we have them....you've given me tears this Sunday morning Pea...
Blessings,

This is so sad, the things we think about in the hospital worried about someone we love. Even the smallest things become so endearing. This is so well done, Pea. You've brought up some memories of my own today.

CJ

Phyllis,
How sad it is, when we wake to find our loved ones have left us to make both sides of the bed, and mash the button on the coffee pot alone.
It takes awhile to remember not place two cups on the counter, but sadly in time we find ourselves only grabbing one.

Lisa
