Poem Artwork

When sorrow is pummeling me,  when anger has me
by the throat, when fear and anxiety are shaking
my confidence and turning my stomach,  when
I begin to feel like a foreign object,  writing kicks
the villains out.  Drags them to a cell, throws
the bolt.   Reinforced both the door and the lock
to make it harder for them to get out.  They will,
but while they are swearing and collecting bruises,
guess who is at peace.   First words are bad to
fall flat.  What erasers and delete keys are for.
But a lot of muses like the silent approach.  Mine
does, I know.  By word eleven, she starts to
draw a picture  or spell out a theme.   Both
at once means temporary leave to be  more than
I.  An instinctual being with the power, if only
for the moment, to connect through lines
and dots that arrange themselves in familiar
patterns as they look for detours that will allow
them to put the patterns to uses that are novel,
at the same time clear.  That only seem new,
being tied to universal truths.  To say
time flies is an understatement.  At your desk
one second, rafting above the stratosphere
the next.  Poem may turn out to be a flop.
Who cares?   Room of my own more than
enough.  Eraser-equipped pencil, indelible
pen, or a machine that squeaks by on zeroes
and ones,  all the same to me.  'Long as words
manage to chauffeur me past my demons,
or work their way around,  I can take
being pummeled, grabbed hold of, and shaken.
Luck holds, put them in a poem.

writing structures our thinking and provides a quick reference with a continuous feedback system -- that is what is required to relieve the nonsensical thoughts we may conjure under the darkness of self inflicted duress --- when open mindedness is behind the closed doors of ignorance -- an interesting read Phyllis Jean -- what lead you to this concept? -- peace and love my dear friend -- Jon Michael

Phyllis,
The message in this poem grabs me. Straight from a writer's heart. I like how you gave us a glimpse of the dark side here - what writing can overcome. Well penned and enjoyed:)

You've nailed it! Anger is not given sufficient credence.

Excellent. The perfect title. "...if only

at the same time clear."

Great lines.

I don't think any poem is a flop, may not be as good as some, but never a flop. Here's a fine example of the good stuff.

It is a kind of an altercation in our head, isn't it Pea? First we are taunted by our muse who holds us captive, waiting for us to listen and convey its message. Then it is us who is in command, taking the snippets from our muse and transforming them into a work that flows from us. It is as though two like magnets are pushing away at each other, only to have one eventually flip over and cohere with the force of the other. Love this, Pea.
Take care,
Sherry

(((Pea))),

Your words? A flop? Nay, say I. N E V E R. You inspire me with your elixer - may I have a wee draught? If my words were as learned, as experienced, as beautiful as yours ... sigh.

Write on, my dear, write on!

(((((HUGS))))) and love, Karla.
