If we were children, our hands would clasp
Without trembling for fear of being trapped.
If we were children, our hearts would speak
Without saying a word or missing a beat.
If we were children, we would laugh
And skip merrily down our chosen path.
If we were children, we would cry
At the very idea of saying goodbye.
Darling, let's be children all we can.
Hold happiness in small, determined hands
As we reach for each other without thought
Of the shame and cynicism past hurt taught.
