Mocking Bird
Chack! She dips past,
her wings a velvet slap
against my arm.
I hear cries from the Yaupon;
she mocks me,
pulling my gaze to the roof.
There she reigns,
mistress of misdirection,
feathers ruffling in the breeze.
I'll miss her in autumn,
when the berries blush,
too late for her brood,
And again in winter,
leaden skies no match
for her sunrise pose.
I sense the solstice.
