“When Natalie Dances”

When Natalie dances, everyone smiles
the whole world watches her every move
Her skirt twirls in an ocean of colors
that even old backyard dogs can see
They say that when she was young
her innocence had become a religion
because she could convert civilized man
with the brazen art of her sensuality

When Natalie dances, I become a saint
sealing my eyes and all my thoughts
with the paint of opaque distraction
and immediately drink away my dreams
For every time she would look at me
she would draw me in with her desire
and I would have to chase her away
with a shovel full of incoherent words

When Natalie dances, music begins to play
and I become completely awash in guilt
for listening intently to her sensual cries
and for wanting to fully understand her
for my heart goes out to her in the cold
knowing I could be playing into her hands
and it never fails to amaze me at how easy
it is to be kneeling before her altar

When Natalie dances, I feel her rhythm
It is translated even through my bones
and I waltz throughout her imagination
as soon as her feet touch the floor,
Bereft of the dignity that fails me
the moment that she takes my hand
and her bright eyes gaze into my soul
as if my flesh was as translucent as glass

When Natalie dances, even women sigh
deriving that vital energy from her youth
if only for a fraction of a punctuated dream
one laced with the perfume of perfection
Simultaneous, I relive a past through her eyes
in an indeterminate sentence of indiscretions
and my frail heart begins to decompose
when I no longer taste the salt of her tears
