Syllables
As a child I liked to play school
Downstairs in the red-tiled playroom.
I prized my chalkboard,
icon of newly-met knowledge.
Today I was both teacher and student:
only children must fill in the blanks
with imagination on rainy days.
Today’s lesson was words
made more palpable and intriguing
with each silken rub of the chalk.
“the”
a single handclap
or stamp of a delighted foot
“tiny”
finger cymbals meet twice:
ting-ting!
“mystery”
a measure of waltz-time glides
over the linoleum
Suddenly,
I am dancing
