I’ve been having a lot of debates with an old friend.
We’ve known each other more than fifty years.
This friend is an evangelical, Christian conservative
that still believes Bush was one of America’s greatest Presidents
and the invasion of Iraq a stroke of genius
that would introduce democracy to the Middle East.
He also believes abortion is the same as murder.
He’s not alone in his beliefs.
I mentioned that the earth was over crowded
and kids should not be born into a world where hundreds of millions go to bed hungry each night.
His response, “Lloyd, we could fit the entire population
in Texas and have room left over.”
My reply, “Would you like to live next door to Ben Laden and his Islamic extremists?”
He didn’t reply.
Meanwhile, an angry Vietnamese man murdered more than a dozen people in the United States recently. That was the fifth killing spree in a month.
I’m sure the response will be a call for more gun control,
and I’m not moving to Texas with the rest of humanity.
When the time comes, I’ll find a cave hidden by ancient trees
and hide.
After all, nature is man’s best friend.
Maybe I’ll take a dog along for company.

That being said, this poem raises many questions. Do we need more in Texas? Enough here, already. Believe me, I know: the NorthCentral part of the state is growing faster than can be kept up with. I want to move OUT.
Sorry I couldn't effectively review your poem - it's good, but raises too much controversy - half will agree with you, half with your friend - no one wins, I don't think. :(

As for Bush, I truly hope he goes down in history as the very worst President we've ever had - an Iraq invasion based on lies, the horrendous Katrina Fiasco, and that guy bin Laden, who he never even went after, and who is still out there - laughing at us, today.
Maybe the best way to win the argument with your friend
is to write your way out of it. Maybe you did. -gene.

Is there room for me, too, in that cave? Please say yes. How well I can identify with this and yet I try and tell myself I shouldn't be disappointed with the world, I don't have that right...but I can't help it. Once again, your voice is strong and worthwhile.
