To read some good Native American novels, Tony Hillermans books are wonderful, and widely read by NA. I think they made him an honorary tribal member because of his attempt to be factual.
My first Holloween here in AZ, I lived in an apartment. Answering a knock at the door there was a little Navajo girl with her goodie bag standing there, her father, holding a baby with a little jack'o'lantern. Yup...she was dressed like a little Indian. Her dad just grinned, and said she picked out her costume. And if you've never attended a pow wow celebration, do so, for it is also interesting and fun. Today the Indians round up thier cattle and sheep on Harleys, not horses. Sad the way things are going.
i'm ashamed to be white, too...because of what we do to those that are not...excellent, heartfelt sentiments. i grew up in a prejudiced household, my parents and grandma couldn't accept me having friends that weren't (heaven forbid) white...my best friend was black...my feeling was, her skin color was darker than mine, so what?? that didn't change who she was... i still feel that way. we all put our pants on the same way, when cut, we all bleed red...thank you for sharing this important piece.
