How Can I Love Two?

by:  Linda Law

Is there room within the heart to love another

When the one you gave your mind and soul to

Has slipped away....Gone to another place

The one who knew your thoughts, your touch

Is no longer near;  When you know you feel as

if you cannot live again, yet something inside

stirs, again.  You don't want to feel again, for

that is saying the love you had was not forever

so you turn away, again and again....afraid..

knowing that the guilt will swallow you alive

That deep feeling that remains churning your

very breath from uttering the thoughts you

pretend are not there.  The need is strong

and I am not so brave, am not immortal,

my body aches,  skin needs to be touched

my heart is bursting to be held, to be loved

again....yet I run....I can't let go... cannot go

through a loss again, cannot watch another

wither and leave this earth again...the pain

is so immense, yet I am alive, don't want to be

yet I fool myself...pretend that I can't feel

that I can't love, that I don't want or need...

Then like the sun rising in the early morning

dawn, his eyes meet mine...his touch is

soft, kind and gentle on my lips.  I breathe

again, laugh once more, hope that tomorrow

will last forever once again....dare I hope

Dare I pretend, Dare I feel that it's alright

to love again.   Is it possible to store the old

most precious love within a safe place, within

my heart, within my soul.. a place where no one

can ever go... a place that is and always will

be forever yours and mine.  Will I be able to

give to another a new hope,  a promise that

I will give again, without comparison, without

reflection.  Will I be true or will I always think

of you,  step back in time, allow those memories

to unfold....Will I give once again, as I did with

you.... Will you understand. Will you know that

I must breathe again, feel again, be loved and

held again.  Will you know that you are always

tucked safely in my memories; and will you

release me of the guilt I bear, for without your

peace, I cannot share, I cannot give again.

This morning I realize that I can love again,

I have loved again....have not been worthy

as the guilt just cannot leave me to be free

so I ask of thee.... Can I love two.... or will it

always be just you?

Thanks Linda!I came across your writing and love it. I'm new to Authorsden. Incidentally yesterday was my late husband's anniversary and I really needed a poem again. Yes, it is possible to love again, I just feel guilty, like cheating, but i can't stay married to a dead man forever? Well thanks! God bless you!

I think "THIS" and my Soulmate is HERE, I wonder, reality bites
and that time will come, HOW WILL I face it!
Linda, I love this poem and your O P E N giving loving heart for expressing it! As you did so easily!
I must say, Your Soulmate ( in my way of thinking) is your Angel, Your Guiding Angel, and he has Lead you to LOVE Again! as you once was loved and cherished, those feelings he doesn't want YOU to forever miss!
God sent me to say this, I feel in my heart!
Take it as you will... and Know Love is not far, if you O P E N up your own heart!

You have got me. I can relate this to romantic love, or children. I like the deep feelings, and imagery. I admire your loyalty. Please don't be afraid to love again, because of loss. You deserve love and the pain is worth the great joy and fullfillment it brings.

Linda, I have to say I like the analogy that Regis came up with for you, comparing loves to snowflakes as something very good, and I think that it's something that you should take to heart. Til death do us part is the vow, but that can't erase the feelings. I think your former love would want you to accept the gift of a new one. This is a well-done piece of writing and a great sharing of intimacy....Jerry

Honest and very compelling, Linda. It is said that one can indeed love again but as far as I am concerned, I do not think two loves are alike - like snowflakes; all beautiful but each one different. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

Yes Dear Poetess...
"Dare I feel that it's alright to love again." Your words of poetry are the calling of love's heart & soul; in all the forms of love's bounty, love is held in your memories, forevermore is an honor of the love held sacral in time, and yet love gives you boundless permissions to love again...let guilt go free....embrace the wings of loves freedom

This is so beautiful, open and deep. Close your eyes, open your mind, soar with your lost love, and feel in your heart, the answer to this question. You must believe. Warmth and Love to you. Carin' Spirit. Be Well.

Strong questions and thoughts being mused over here Linda. What do I think? Glad you asked, I think we have the capacity and owe it to the ones we loved before to love again if the opportunity should arise. I cannot speak for others but I would like to think if something happened to me my other half would not spend her life alone.

Oh, this si deeply moving, so sad to love someone so deeply and for so long, then live through the pain of watching them pass away. I know the idea of loving again is scary, but like you said, you're still alive and your need love. This is great write, Linda.

You must love again and never does love die
even though the one you loved has moved on.
That love will always be and I believe we
meet again, somewhere and the one you loved
will understand and always love you.
Profound and powerful question.

The answer is simple--it's up the the living to forgive themselves so they can love again but at the same time hold onto that memory of the special, precious love that was lost.

Humans, for the most part, are social creatures and need that touch, that kiss to feel wanted and loved while they are still alive. To hold hands and take a walk. Anyone worthy of being loved should understand that the past is part of that person they want to be with and that past is worth holding onto and remembering because it is part of that person. Love is also letting go. That old story of the bird in the cage and setting it free to see if it returns.

Your poem is wonderful Linda. But, it leaves me with the feeling that in the writing you're looking for answers. Speaking from experience I can tell you that you'll only have one soul mate but it is possible to love another also. It's a different love but love nonetheless. It's like ice cream; one flavor is your first choice but you enjoy others as well.
I wish you love and a very Merry Christmas,
Marcia

Oh you can. Just give the heart it's freedom. It knows how to love each time again. Don't be afraid (as coming from freightened mind) and loose your heart totally. It's so good to feel like this.

It's possible: my Daddy, for one: he and Mom had 39 wonderful years together when she died. Eight years later, he remarried: they had 12 beautiful years, and then HE died. My brother, for another: he was married for 25 years when his wife died; he remarried, and they've been together about three years now. A most beautiful, poignant write. Doesn't diminish the first love, but rather enhances it...well done, Linda.

(((HUGS))) love and Merry Christmas, Karla.

And it's possible to love two: me and Karen! LOL (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Oh Linda this hurts for you have nothing to feel guilt about. It is possible to love two and love again but you have to tuck that first love away in a safe place in your heart and then you'll be able to love with the rest of you. You were true to your first love and he knows that, he wouldn't want you to carry guilt or sadness. So my friend, tuck him away and love your new love so it can blossom and grow. I love you and I know you, that heart of yours is so big it has plenty of room for another love. Love and hugs, Bonnie
