Many of us go through life facing humanity with one face; while in our private moments...the face is blurred.

ARE YOU WEARING A MASK?

by:  Linda Law

Everyday that I awake

I stare in the mirror at the face that looks at me

She should be fresh and ready to face the day

No one can know the pain and struggles

It's not her way.. It's not to be seen by you

Or any that she passed or will brush against

The motions are routine, scrub and shower

The hurt and pains away, scrub too hard it seems

Some days it almost bleeds, resembles her heart

The face is getting older, the lines begin to set

Character is what some call them, ugly is the truth

Tired and withering, the veins begin to surface

dusting and covering will soon not be the answer

She takes another look and wants to cry, yet....

laugher takes its place....then a wide smile

stares back, as she zips the mask in place

Goes to work, goes to classes, errands round

up through the hours, stops to hug or pray

whoever happens to be in need, she knows it

through their eyes, through their movements

She wears her mask like it is made just for her

No one would guess it slips at times, and needs

some slight adjusting...she guesses it's just rusting

Arrives at her safe place, and before the shoes, the bra, the fancy dress, the hair barette is dropped

She unzips....unzips....unzips.....

Whew...the mask is off, and now she can breathe

Without caring that the smile may be glued in

place, therefore she can let the tears fall or laugh

maybe even cry, no one can see, just her and God

She wonders about the less fortunate; will they eat

Will they have shelter, will they be safe?

She wonders why her children do not call or care

She wishes she could give the world the world

No one would guess, she knows how to play the game

A lifetime of playing hide and seek, you can't

find me.... Sometimes, she can't find her either

Then she wonders if she is the only one who

wears a mask.... Can there be others who live life

smiling and being good while never knowing for

themselves...if they will be allright, if they will get

sick, if there will be someone to hold them...

When she faces each day, sunny, rainy, even cold

ones....is the face that she sees, really the face

or is it just the mask that they wear so well?

A passionate, revealing and awesome writing!
Love your new picture..uh-oh your mask slipped, revealing a very kind, caring, truthful and beautiful soul! This writing describes the many persons injured by acts from others, and the MASK, our protective cover we wear to please others.
Love to you, and wherever you found your mask, send me one too! Yours is a mask of love for others, caring for the less, and shining for everyone! Now I know why your book carries such wonderful writings!

Most wear a mask of one composition or another when dealing with the affairs of their public lives but few can articulate the social, individual, and poetic significance of doing so as well these accomplished dynamic lines. Greatly appreciate the read,

Excellent piece, Linda... you know I avoid
mirrors as much as possible... lol but you
know those wrinkles, those lines tell the tale...
it is about character... you've got that, for sure.

I think the Creator or Creatoress in his/her wisdom and grace bestowed us all with a series of these masks, not made to use to disguise ir hide behind for ill reasons but to help us get through the various ordeals we face each day. One to wear when we want to laugh at the naughtiness of a child yet have to appear stern, one to wear to smile when we see seniors who are in pain and need to see a smiling face, one to be happy and carefree when we are down and sad, one to wear when we are at work when all we can think about is being home with a sick child or friend and so many more. But when we are alone we can take off the masks and just be God's children..

Gosh I always could see the smiling young gal I married even at 69 and the wrinkles setting in but with a little rouge and lip stick wow the years just faded away and there was my young sweetheart smiling back at me. You still got it gal and don't let any mirror tell you different.

Love and hugs,

Brilliant, Linda!!!

"She wishes she could give the world the world" -- And that is a heart-sick problem because the world sometimes seems to be a montage of 6.5 billion masked spitits, all of them writing the same poem.

Wooooo Hooooooo ... what a thought :-)

No matter what face you wear my friend, they are all beautiful faces for your heart shines through them all. It's beacon and you can't hide from it...WE may not know your in pain and hurting but there is someone who does and he blesses you with these beautiful faces, young and old, to shine you light on others...So wear those faces Linda for he can find you underneath and bless you blessing us...love and hugs, Bonnie

You may call it a 'mask', I call it a beautiful face with big sparkling intelligent eyes and a gorgeous smile but I get your point. We all wear our masks and it's only those really caring folk that bother to look deeper. Great poem!
Thanks for commenting on my light-hearted blog. I am honoured.

Hi Linda:

One good thing about you is that you give yourself to the world. What you see is what you get, and you're the most honest person I've ever met!!!

Many of us DO wear this mask from time to time, especially when we go to work and have to be courteous in greeting the public. Even when we have a bad day, we can't even take that to work with us. This is so true; and the only person who knows the person deep inside us are our own selves.

This is a very expressive write, and you have my applause and standing ovation!!!

Linda,

Many of us present one face to the public and hide behind a mask of pain in private. Powerfully penned, well done.
