Just Over The Hill

The walk past your home

this early morning

lonely to me;

so sad so lonely,

my dog's walk and mine

past what till yesterday

had been your home.

Though moved just over the hill

no more than eight miles away,

the walk for Kody and myself

on our green-belted walkway

passing what had been your home,

now saddened because the warm,

funny, sometimes sad spontaneous

conversations between

we four friends gone now.

Though moved just over the hill

no more than eight miles away,

the spontaneity of an unexpected

glass of wine for my lady,

or vodka tonic for me

along with warm conversation

now gone.

Though moved no more than eight miles

just over the hill,

gone now the knowledge that those I so like

now further...

much further than a short walk

spontaneously fills my heart with sadness.

Gone now the knowledge

dear friends were but minutes away,

upon our beautiful tree lined walkway

for the patio door opening to their home

now shows but empty rooms within,

and this fills my heart with sadness,

sadness and loneliness.

Passing what had been your home

this morning, Kody, going to the gate

listening for, looking for Lexi,

and when no bark came,

when no little white dog came,

cocking his head, I knew,

my dog missed you,

as I do.

Our friendship will continue,

this I know.

But when most aspects of life

are planned,

friendly spontaneity: our conversations,

the glass of wine for my lady,

a vodka tonic for me.

I know our friendship will continue,

but now,

Though moved no more than eight miles

away, now, though:

“Hey, we’re coming over the hill!”

you will say to us.

Or, “We’re coming over the hill!”

we will say to you...

But still,

The walk past your home

on any early morning

or any evening,

lonely to me,

so sad so lonely,

my dog's walk and mine

past what till yesterday

had been your home.

Mark,
Alot of heartfelt sadness in this poem, I feel your loneliness because my neighbor has recently moved away. Watching the empty house every day, where their was once laughter now only shadows. I understand how YOU feel.

Blessings,
~Linda

We just need to be thankful that we have or had good friends.

Oh boy how this draws on the emotional sadness upon moving. One act and everything changes, this you bring out very well...

Be always safe,
Karen

This one so sad, Mark, consider yourself blessed that you had such good neighbors - many don't know theirs, anymore. Well penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I am reading your poem and thinking of our wonderful neighbours we had left behind as we moved although a few more miles between us, I too miss them, nothing remains the same. Thank you for sharing Mark.

Going "over the hill" both ways, literally and the other...time does it to everything, even putting wrinkles on friendship's face, on our memories, on the good times past when we were comfortable with our little routines, predicted daily encounters...then, suddenly, like a stone from David's sling it hits the forehead of our quotidian Goliath and we are filled with sadness, asking ourselves why it needed to end.

TRUE FRIENDSHIP IS A WONDERFUL THING...THE INDIVIDUALS BOND AND WHEN ONE MOVES AWAY...THEY ARE DEARLY MISSED BUT IT'S A GOOD THING THEY ARE ONLY EIGHT MILES AWAY...IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER STATE OR COUNTRY. ...OVER THE HILL SEEMS LIKE IT'S NOT TOO FAR TO GO FOR A FRIEND. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS VERY WELL WRITTEN WORK. ENJOYED.

It is is difficult when good friends relocate and what has come to be your 'norm' is turned upside down...but at least they are not all that far away, even though the daily walks with Kody and your lady will not be the same, you can always enjoy the memories of the times you all had together and look forward to making new memories as they settle in their new home. Touching piece, my friend ~ Lizzie
