By His Own Hand

An important man.

A viable, valuable,

highly educated,

well thought of man.

An architect, this

highly in demand man.

“Learn this new

technology,”

he was told.

“The computer

is here to stay,”

he was told.

But, “No, not me!”

The viable, valuable

well thought of man

said, “No computer

for me!”

“Sorry, then,

 you’re gone then!”

the man was told.

“Learn now!

Work now on the

computer!”

The highly educated.

architectural,

man was told.

“Learn now!”

He was warned.

But, “No, not me!”

The viable, valuable,

well thought of man,

forced from his work,

now trading his skill

for a bottle.

Trading his highly

demanded skill

for a bottle.

So now,

now, twelve years past,

so now,

by his own making,

this important man.

This viable, valuable,

highly educated,

well thought of man,

listening to no one,

taking no advice.

By his own making,

in his own world.

the bottle now

his only friend.

By his own hand,

morning to night,

by his own hand,

forever holding the glass

of amber fluid.

By his own making,

now an unshaven,

incontinent,

fall down drunk.

By his own hand,

spurned by all

that know him,

driving away

all that knew him.

This important man,

this viable, valuable,

highly educated,

well thought of man,

by his own hand...

Reviews of "By His Own Hand"

This composition ignites the dynamo of wisdom. Through its mellifluous voice "By His Own Hand" whisper on my ears: The wise man lives on boat, but he is building another one.

I have learned through the lines of "By His Own Hand".

In respect and admiration,

One of the big brains of the past century/millennium once said that it would be needed only three computers in the world. Anybody told him yet?

I relate big time to this poem, Mark. I was a linotype operator foor many years. I loved the linotype and the smell of printer's ink which I still have running through my veins. When the computer's began to take over the typesetting business I fought it tooth and nail and, like the man above, refused to touch one much less trade my typesetting skills into a newfangled computer. I refused. That began my career offshore as a cook. It was only after I finally began to write my stories and poems that I broke down and joined the rest of the world and bought a computer. I've kicked my ass for not doing it sooner. Good poem. There are still those like this man today.

We sure do have to accept and adapt to change in life, or it will leave us behind. I often wonder what the ninety year olds must think of all the technological advances that have come about in the past century. The world is spinning a lot faster now. Good write, Mark.

It is a sad but real truth that computers have broken but also made many people. I started my career as a draftsman doing Navigational Chart work by hand and watched it go full circle to completely automated system with a staff that decrease from 20 down to about 5. Some embraced the technolgy...some shied away from it but you can be sure the ones that embraced it were in those five. I also look back and wonder if not for computers would I have the books published today that I do..

As life goes full circle, sometimes we are important and valuable only between our ears...

Be always safe,

Very chilling.
I'm sure it hits close to the mark for some.
Maybe if he knew about AD he'd give it a try.
This is the best use of a computer I've found.
