Mental Deficiency

Is there a mental deficiency within my brain?

I know I should feel absolute pain

in the suffering of others,

that I should feel absolute pain

in the pain of others.

And yes,

I do!

However,

the horrors that assail us daily,

that deluge our senses

with untold pain

with untold cruelty

with untold reason.

Awakening, what will today bring?

Awakening,

first conscious thought may well be:

What is the horror this day will bring?

A bomb blowing a government building

to smithereens killing hundreds?

Planes flying into buildings killing thousands?

A hurricane blowing the ocean into a city killing

and displacing thousands?

A tsunami washing cities away killing

and displacing thousands?

An earthquake destroying a country killing

and displacing thousands?

A mother drowning her children?

A father killing his children?

A rampaging lunatic killing all within sight?

A fetus torn from the ripped stomach

of an expectant mother?

What is the horror of this day?

What is the daily horror this day will bring,

...that tomorrow will bring?

I know I should feel absolute pain

in the suffering of others,

that I should feel absolute pain

in the pain of others,

and I do...

yet...

In a strange way I feel detached.

In a strange way I feel my mind

overloaded with the new horror

that assails me daily,

that deluge my senses

that,

in a strange way

leaves me feeling detached

and not as sympatric

as I know I should feel

leaving me to ask,

is there a mental deficiency within my brain?

Outstanding socio-philosophic-psychoanalytical composition. A picture of one's soul in searching for fairness and Justice. A poetic magnificent thought's striking. "Mental Deficiency" glows.

In respect and admiration,

Sometimes there's just too much horror around us to truly be affected by it, unless it hits close to home. We only deal with as much as we can at a time. Well done, Mark.

It is not...you are just witnessing Apocalypse's trailers of what it is in store for us when the rest of the world go really bananas!

The suffering of others is real. Most you cannot change. The media exploitation under the guise of humanitarian interest 24/7 to sell viagra is a root cause of your apparent but unfounded sense of guilt. Five cents please, and call me in the morning. PS. turn off Fox News, ABC, NBC. Patrick

Powerful poem that actually addresses a troubling future for mankind...we are at times becoming desensitized to all tragedy until it hits close to home.

I believe it comes to a point when we realize we can't fight it or change it alone, so we put our minds at rest. Karla made a good point, I hurt everytime I turn on the news and it is very hard to accept the pain of the world. No dear Friend you don't have Mental Deficiency, you are Human.

It's overload of the horrific, it's the mind's way of preventing insanity from sorrow and fear. A thought provoking pen Mark

No, I don't think a Mental Deficiency, Mark: I think it's God's way of telling us to turn off the news and to stop dwelling on the horrors of the world that is getting worse day by day. I seldom watch TV anymore, just because of this ... I can't take any more pain and sadness. :( Effectively penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
