A poignant reminder of those times… Hard to forget.
I worked 30 years at Texas Southern University. Although little publicized, in 1968, the National Guard marched down through campus and fired on protesting students. Bullet holes remain in some of the dormitories from that incident where no one was killed.
When I came to campus in 1981, the campus security force, numbering about 10 people, was under scrutiny because the campus had suffered an armed robbery of the cashier at fall registration. Over the years, the police force as been continually beefed up, and now numbers about 50 people, 40 of which are armed officers.
Texas Legislature just passed a law allowing students to "open carry" firearms on campus. For some reason I see a confrontation coming…
Eh . . . Those were the early days of organized rebellion and you are correct, the National Guard was scared, and trigger happy. Also, they were not trained in how to react in that sort protest against America.
