Zippered

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Coupling the news of Watson winning on Jeopardy, and then reading a review of “The Hemlock Cup,” a biography of Socrates, questions of the AI future make for interesting “what ifs,” especially in light of some 2012 "reading" statistics:
1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.
42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.
80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.

Zippered

Witness arrives as wounded Conscience
standing aloof under street lamps
beside neon ripple
beneath skyscraper mortality

Before it

Lining New York's Public Library sidewalk
zippered black Nanobot bags confine
printed and bound intelligence like frozen ice
broken by storm and quake

Spines and pages enmeshed
history upon stacked history
knowledge once free to just be
now as rubble held tight
awaiting caravan by air-glide dumpsters

Conscience moves up the marbled steps
like visitors first finding the pyramids of civilization
visiting manifest of Time's later
civilization's 42nd and 5th corner stone

This edifice to Man's advancement
children's exposure to what has been
adult's learning of what might be
now destined as cavernous shock and awe of another kind

Evident Conscience moves through pillared entrance

Listening

Seeing

Pained ether roils within
vacuous marbled bastions
their mourning loss conceded
their synaptic sorrow weeping
now but diminutive ghosts of

Sanskrit
hieroglyph
and Roman text

Turning back to the streets
as air-ride's floating destiny arrives
bags are robotically lifted on air-belts
one last gasp of learned breath moves from hard cover to soft
acquiescing beneath suffocating blackness

Tail gates close

Conscience solemnly asks

What gain
comes of fear-entrenched ignorance

Where be the glory
of blind-progress's spoils

Why indulge the salute to what might be momentary gain
while Time's honored wisdom is made to succumb

Conscience contemplates

What happened

Why such a fear

Why such a gamble

Into the night
silent vehicles travel
arriving at launch pads to infinity
where bodies of millennia knowledge
await becoming the ion-propelled barges of space-fill

As launches continue
questions dwindle
resistance wanes
mind matters less

Conscience ceases

Fear remains

the stats are of course depressing,
lamentable, crushing to the spirit
and banish hope of individual thinking -
we are no longer dangerous, we are obedient
without realising it and that's exactly
the way 'they' want us;
the final six lines are, for me,
our corpse laid out but nobody
interested or willing except the
honourable poet to conduct
a post mortem

Stay Strong, Odin, you are much needed

Those wincing authors of antiquity witnessing their removal "their synaptic sorrow weeping": what a vision to hold. Living in Washington State, Georgia, and California, I have never been to New York; but these writings of yours, Odin, allow me to hold the last line of "Zippered" as my mantra; i.e., the slow of country vs. "neon ripple". Two deer just pranced by the house here...make that three, vs. terms like "skyscraper mortality." On the other hand, I am astonished how you write contrary to the "West's" version of New York residents....too busy to see. You see! I love that. Fourth stanza holds a brilliant weave of Time ("42nd and 5th cornerstone") I'm hugely shocked by the statistics of your introduction. I wish that was an April Fool. ~~ Diana

I have wandered inside the New York Public Library many, many times. It was during my so-called "homeless" days, although no one is ever really homeless if he has his health, his mind, and a will to work. I read a book there once, and for all these years I have held on to its title, as being, "The Late, Great God," and I have always thought Robert Penn Warren wrote it, but I have never been able to find the damn thing. I have come to the conclusion that I was on an acid trip and imagined the whole thing. Sorry. Got carried away.
