Standing Alone

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We sometimes long for travel to pacify loneliness, not anticipating certain realities of addressing the unknown. Those of us who have accumulated “miles,” used them, and moved on, to reflection, we just might be the lucky ones.

Standing Alone

Standing alone in Cambridge
A hotel lobby to somewhere
Yet again another place where life's trumpet
Endures confinement in its case
Its silence reaching out
To quiet anteroom chatter of expectation
Atop the distant bartender's "last call"

A place where books of the courtesy library
Remain silent with dust of disinterest accumulating

A  place where silent voices speak boredom
Nervous laughter cries for reward

The complacent breathing of a doorman
Waits out the dampness of nights
Longing for the morning sun

My friend across the counter asks
"Will that be cash or credit, sir?"
I answer, smiling
"Credit."

Today's lobby to somewhere
Yesterday's anticipation of dreams
Not yet realized

A long journey's stopover
Where carrying the baggage of time
Gives cessation but for a single night's repose
Allowing for the morning alarm to announce
Yet another day
Another voyage going toward
Another lobby to somewhere

Standing alone

I too, have made many lonely travels to distant places and boring practices. Now it is time for me to reflect, like you are, for what it all means in the course of our existence. I can share them now like when I told my mother that story that she never got when my letter from Egypt was tossed rather than mailed by the man who deceived me when I paid for it to be stamped.

Thought-provoking.

Odin, I can so relate to this poem. I, myself can be lonely but I don't allow it to be a negative thing. I embrace my "sloneness", and live each moment as if it were the last one I will be in. It does help to see the world with new eyes, after all our lives are what we make them....

Thought provoking and quite revealing poetry!

Peace, love and light,
Amber

for me, Odin, this is underscored
with a real sense of isolation and loneliness
and it reaches and touches me far far within,
i love how you say it but the message disturbs
but i won't and can't shy away from disturbance;
it's a beautiful poem

Hate to say it, but you can be alone in a city of ten million people. I was. New York was the city. But then I was alone also in Taylor, Arkansas, population 700+, so what's the difference? Alone is alone and the quicker we understand what being alone means the better off we will be.
