Ode to Procrastination

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

A poem a day proves good exercise, but oh the temptation to renege. Aside from that, this is another exploration of subjects that are sometimes damn hard to make poetic.

Ode to Procrastination

This thief of time
bears lazy witness
as dodge we will
the task at hand
romancing guilt to linger

How glib our avoidance
even as terror looms steady
threatening resolve to answer
as we smile away our dread

Yesterday’s denial nudges once more
today’s deferal slinks deeper into shadow
tomorrow’s coming dawn grins defiantly
our cloud of suspension gathers further storm

Ever we question

This fear of decision
this solitary game of hide and seek
begeting no winner
consoling no loser
rewarding none who delay

For procrastination
knows well the power of no
even as the power of yes
remains poised at the ready
anxious
but not committed
heroic
but prone to slumber

Sooner or later

Grown tired of postponement
said chore eventually initiates
embracing action’s duty
banishing forever a rescheduled tomorrow

For just as self worth's continuum
knows patience be virtue
courage left idle
too easily a fleeting moment
can jettison into weightlessness
remaining always one's nemesis

Standing tall
we prepare to move
knowing the eye of one’s storm
is but a fool's retreat
a place where stalling
breeds further self-doubt

Victory resides above the clouds
refusing to cower before a gray indifference
where clear sight of purpose
enjoys unstressed will to commit
here we act
we leap
we dare to fail

Procrastination, a favorite of many, an addiction of some, and a challenge for others. Nicely penned.

I do believe we all have suffered from this thing called procrastination...I have really tried to be better at this. When I don't procrastinate, it does make me feel so much better and in control of my life..

Nicely done, bravo!

Peace, love and light,
Amber

I know of this professional thief called procrastination. He resides above the clouds. unreachable. untouchable. but, we can talk about this tomorrow.

never put off until tomorrow
what you can put off today, but i'm
not feeling guilty, Odin, and i have a
thousand excuses;
as Jerry points out, this is more than suitable
material and of course it's delivered with
an excellent brain attached

I have over 5,000 poems as when I started I wrote several a day, then went down to less, but still try at least one per day though it is getting much harder as I get older...maybe my arteries are hardening that lead to my poetic brain...e

I admire those of you with the discipline to write a poem a day. Many years ago, I chose a poem a week and sometimes regret it. Writing a poem a day makes it relatively easy to drop a day or two along the way. Writing a poem a week forces me to make sure I get one in even if I don't want to. I still want to write novels, not poems, so I must be procrastinating for reading all these. ;-)

Heh. the power of yes / remains poised at the ready / anxious / but not committed / heroic / but prone to slumber

Ab-so-lutely! Don't understand why you thought the choice of subject was difficult to make poetic, I think this is very much a poetic bit of taking procrastination on.

Odin,
No more complete desciptiopn need be given to your subject now, I read it twice to make sure I didn't miss a beat.
