Last Night the Morning Vanished

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Loss is a great teacher of lessons. Would that we could all remain students, knowing we create the same lesson over and over until we learn it.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Last night the morning vanished

Where once there were sunrises waiting to be seen

Even as clouds seemed heavy

For somewhere in last night’s time in between

Where once bright reminders ushered in the dawns of tomorrow

With memories yet to come

And road signs not yet discovered

Emptiness filled the moonlit sky

When I awoke this morning and last night became today

All that seemed possible evaporated with the mist of drifting fog

The shorelines of my soul no longer seemed reachable

Just as friendly trade winds steered afar

Where once their warmth cradled my solitude.

We must trust the night of tomorrow will bring a new beginning

For time cannot repeat itself

It can only continue forward as time

Leaving only in its path that residue called memory

We once even called it… what? What did we call it

When there was never a last night to make the morning vanish?

I can relate to this in the feeling that things keep moving along, something needs to change but, what, what is going to turn it around. Not a real fond recollection of yesturday either. This inbetween, neither here nor there. A stuck moment yearning for that little push out. Or at least that's what I feel from this.

I like the time leaving in its path that "residue called memory". ~~ Diana

sometimes it's best not to call it anything at all,
leave it hanging rather than trying to label;
i sense a more personal intimate tone here, Odin,
and a definite warmth for the subject

An interesting concept well presented in your poem. I once wrote a poem entitled, The Day Night Died, but that was a horror story for Halloween. You could call this one, Mourning for Morning, for its sad underpinnings.

Don't know what we called it, Odin, but these "And road signs not yet discovered" are the things that perk up life, especially if we do not heed them or cannot see them.
