Dust of the Morrow

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

While recently re-reading of “Lucy’s Baby" a 3.3-million-year-old fossilized toddler uncovered in 2006 among north Ethiopia’s badlands along the Great Rift Valley, I was left wondering further of Carl Sagan’s perspective of life as we know it, this infinitesimal participation in perpetual existence.

Dust of the Morrow

Frozen tundra now voicing
my slide through time
once rivers of fire
holding screeches made mute

my burial made proper
by laws unspoken
unread
unknown
leave unrequited
questions below

might my mother be
hardened water beneath
that by eclipsed radiant sunlight
once hid me from molten red

while father gone absent
made angry with Nature's wrath
found bow made useless
arrows but kindling flames

I remember
broken crystals once shrouded
my peaceful grave
layered under times under

my secret unveiled
will weather yet further
the formula of Matter
this spinning gyroscope
of perpetual chance
this master of abruptness
unfettered by primal inquiry

proudly Nature stands
picking at my bones
once resonant with motion
now but echoes of dissonance

such darkness of light
continues to hold
what can't be seen
by Ends that know
of further Beginnings

beyond

where all once was
tomorrow will be
merely ice of one's sorrows

the shells of existence, what will stand out from our time in the future? if anything at all.

Carl Sagan was right. Life will inevitably come forth and seek intelligence for survival. Recently, it was discovered that cave drawings attributed to Cro Magnon are actually much older, putting them in the time of the Neanderthal, thought not to be able to express thoughts in drawings this complex.

In cyberspace, ten thousand years from now, your poem will be examined by some automated intelligence reviewing human history, and they will find your insight remarkable for the human race of our time.

How I have often thought the same. I have pondered and taken myself back in time. What were the thoughts then even with the most primal creature and early man. What is merely all survival? Did they ever ponder a future? What were the thoughts in mind during the great shift of their destruction...

thank you, so well written and thoughts I have often pondered on myself

What we don't know fascinates us.
What we do know spurs us on to greater discovery.
Until the day when we uncover our own bones.
