Pin Pricks of Irony

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Living in our own skins, not those of others, fosters many a surprising thought... and dreams.

Pin Pricks of Irony

I once dreamed of an endless road
Streaming across a New Mexico desert
Like a holiday ribbon laid out as invitation

Lined on both sides in store front windows
Mannequin after mannequin beamed with smiles
Pinned of finery in waiting
Suits
Dresses
Gowns
And tuxes

Little naked children
Pressed faces against the glass
Eyes wide with question
Mouths agape with wonder

Like me

Little did they know
Whether on 5th Ave
Or Manhattan's East Harlem
Dreams have their reality
Pin pricks and all

Lest we forget
Like the mannequin's destiny
Irony never sleeps

I think that I get the irony. Why is it in a land of plenty where desires are so great, so many children still go naked and hungry?

Ah, reality is our constant reminder of what is real. We can press our faces against the glass, and have our dreams about whatever. But dreams have a tendency to break apart and go away. Not so reality. For the good or for the bad, reality-R-Us. Dreams? Sure. But you can't count on dreams. You can one hundred percent count on reality.
