Might weaponry for 21st century wars (of all kinds) be so sophisticated, many of us don’t understand their insidious power? Some are easily comprehended: “Initial symptoms following exposure to Sarin are a runny nose, tightness in the chest and constriction of the pupils. Soon after, the victim has difficulty breathing and experiences nausea and drooling. As the victim continues to lose control of bodily functions, the victim vomits, defecates and urinates. This phase is followed by twitching and jerking. Ultimately, the victim becomes comatose and suffocates in a series of convulsive spasms.” Then, there are the other weapons.

a dictator smiles
pontificates on defensive measures
as if a necessary cleansing of his nation
had just taken place

our eyes widen in horror
we look in the mirror
imagine our own faces dissolving
our throats closing
we shudder

we live well
but life is awful
we mutter

DEVELOPING STORY
survivors crowd roads
as another nod from the Man
delivers further annihilation
the final-curtain dose
and millions more writhe

appalled
too much to bear
we flip the channel

prime time exceptionalism
idols exchanging bodily fluids
titillating escapism
tearing down
ripping off
plunging into…

reality shows we call them
