Carnivoricide

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Might it be that after many years of growing up, some of us have finally provided ourselves a canvas high enough and broad enough to bear some unknown brilliant colors. Might Theodore Dreiser’s line in Sister Carrie, “How true it is that words are but vague shadows of the volumes we mean” provide longevity and sustenance? To live knowledgeably and thoroughly to the end---such sublime pleasure is an honorarium and a gift.

Carnivoricide

Oh
To stay conscious
Amidst heavy sky
As Nature and man turns on itself
Air so laden with waste
Bridling the leaf and flower
With faux caresses of duplicity
Putrefaction smothered
By the Air-Wick of deceit

Invisible to consciousness
The mind's chemical warfare
Within
Without
Void of declaration

Everywhere
Rainbowed poison
Sheens our waters
Coats existence
While languid opportunity succumbs
Becoming erosion's dust
Time's vortex of failed pretension

Sadly

This species of reason
Stands stoic atop castled walls
Peering through deceptive lenses
At fields and waters below
Unaware a race for superiority
Ultimately succumbs to piranha-infested moats
Where abused living
Becomes skeletal throw-away

The what of why
The why of how
The how of where
Continues unrealized
Trumpeting its ignorance
Into the growing echo
The vacuous Neverland
Tenacious self-destruction
Becoming wind blown waste

Yet

We of us
Some of us
Continue to squirm about
As delusional board pieces
Playing a lethal game
Ignorant of Byron's
"Those pagod things of saber sway
With fronts of brass and feet of clay"
Even as our locust-like consumption
Invites a pandemic carnivoricide

species of reason, somedays I wonder if not more parasitic, perdictable and clone like.

"This species of reason"
is one of the great lines, Odin,
one that will stay with me a long long while
for i feel its impact and its connotations - it's
now come to this that reason, once close to natural
to us, has become a marketable and needs a label,
needs explaining...abuse will win, i fear

Our predatory nature is revealed. We can't help increasing our territory until we destroy ourselves in our own consumption. It is so hard for us to stop because it is in our genes, our very DNA to plunder and procreate to our death.

Good quote. You make some interesting (conscious or otherwise) allusions to King Nebuchadnezzars dream in the Book of Daniel. I find that this construct waxes prophetic in various ways, especially in some of the imagery. "By the Air-Wick of deceit" ... yah, isn't that how we're programmed in a modern society? If it's pleasing to the senses it must be good for us. That in juxtapose to this line: "succumbs to piranha-infested moats"... it seems the very thing the castle depends on for protection would just as soon devour the inhabitants. You're swinging a sword in this one, Odinsan. Peace ...
