Bottled Bubbles

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

This time of year always reminds me of the last rest home visit to my father and imagining what images might have being dancing behind his tearful, yet sparkling, eyes. I guess we all tend to imagine what a parent’s last thoughts are like.

Bottled  Bubbles

How small the funnel then

My breath sending circles

Left

Right

High

"Blow" mother said

The colors like rainbows

Floated tiny dreams skyward

Popping ever so gently

Time passed

With a big boy’s hollowed out ping pong paddle

I ran in circles

Holding firm the maker

Trailing fantasies aglow

A bigger ring of joy

A magical super wand

Making daydreams float even higher

And greater

Time made me older

My son’s  first exposure

As he lay atop the grass

Beaming

Giggling

Staring

As I too passed on lineage of joy

Blowing all things pretended skyward

Thoughts embraced  my adulthood

Hovering reveries forever seductive

The launching of merely bigger bubbles

Destined to pop

Becoming but yesterday’s perceptions

Today

My pillow drenched with fatigue

My IV holding watch

My temperature rising

My breathing unsure

Fevered ending ever present

I close my eyes

Ask air and space create smiles for my sorrow

Set afloat glittering images

For my dreams not yet burst

For my childhood memories fading fast

For that time when

Bubbles were just bubbles

Achingly beautiful, Odin. To enter the state of 'other' is an empathetic skill in sensitivity and awareness, both of which surface in each segment of this poem. So much tenderness flows through these lines and makes the language suit the subject intricately. The progression is wonderful, full of love, learning and light. "Destined to pop" carries great relevance and multimeaning. Asking air and space to create smiles for sorrow.....deep, deep reaching concept that wraps up 'care,' which exudes from, infuses with and concludes the finale of a life. Excellent expression with which I immediately identify, Odin. Thank you ~~ Diana

Beautifully rendered, Odin. Behind your father's watery orbs, let's hope and believe the bubbles of childhood were rising still, carrying him aloft on memories of rainbow-filled, happy days. Love the intergenerational connectivity in this write and how the pastime of bubble-blowing and the instruments we use to do so can create this sequential, timeless effect. xx

Why was I thinking the ills of carbonated beverages? Instead I read a poignant treatise on the magical properties of bubbles in one's life. When the bubbles burst we are no more. Very sobering and intense.
