Precipice Longing

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As I complete the polish on my novel, Echosis, its genesis made me on the idea of our life’s echoes and their unique magic. Do they repeat the past, or beckon the future? Ever notice how intently we listen to their colored voices?

Precipice Longing

Once
where chance dared not go
while passion starved eyes
drank from chalices of make believe

When
from tree-house perches
where purity of peanut butter and jelly whispers
teased innocent fantasies
and fed penthouse imaginings

While
expected bedrock truth
eroded with fortune's reversal
pup tents and comic books
fish lines and swimming holes
fluttered through moonless dreams
speaking humorous one-liners sadly

Reluctantly
I shed the husks
from premature harvests
stand naked before shadows dim
as yesterday's wick clocks out
with sputter-choked flame
desperately seeking new beginnings

Now
the tether waning
time makes ready
the eyes
the ears
for distances of another kind

Preparing
to see
and hear
beyond the edge
where tomorrow's echoes
caress wisdom's journey
and perhaps defy another
precipice longing

here you have brought visions to play that by your final stanza leave us with thoughts to be appreciative of for future thoughts

"desperately seeking new beginnings" Desperately? A lot of personal subtext here. Certainly the substance of this is dramatic; redolent (in certain ways) of Playhouse 90. As I see it, new beginnings need not be sought desperately; they are given freely each morning upon awakening. Much undifferentiated consciousness in this; that certainly for naive observers might easily be construed as a form of thaumaturgy in pursuit of worldly success. The piece gives one a sense that at last some door will open, for the protagonist, where a kind of satisfaction will be attained that exonerates him from past failures and all the naysayers.
Congrats on the completion of your novel ...
Continued inspiration...

Your words dazzle. But if this is not a stream of consciousness intended to set of mood of expectancy, then I've missed it all. I'm just a neophyte in this world of words called poetry.

Odin, in your introduction: life's echoes repeat past or beckon future? I think both, like your 3-way Mirror ebook (which I just purchased yesterday), all three past, present, future, echo unique magic. Nice intro to this poem. I like "...bedrock truth/eroded with fortune's reversal" "speaking humorous one-liners sadly" (especially the 'sadly'), "....yesterday's wick clocks out" and "beyond the edge." This poem rolls out like a map, a parchment of a lifespan, and your physical descriptions of pup tents, comic books and fishing poles give colorful illustrations and a kind of warm temperature to this reading. The last two stanzas give me courage to look forward....and to just plain look. ~~ Diana
