Calamitous Yawn

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Sometimes events take time to be realized fully. Today's drowning tragedy by "Sneaker Waves" in Northern California too no time at all to impact this writer. Sad, indeed, mostly for the surviving sister/daughter. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/11/26/sea-drown-san-francisco/1727583/

Calamitous Yawn

Once exotic images

today's fragment of Time

Nature's bellowing now calm

While eyes fall prey to sadness

Who of the Living

can fly without wings

open velvet petals

beneath a salt encrusted yesterday

or walk upon fertile land

now contaminated burial grounds of Nature's wrath?

Yet

In spite of a broken earth

immersed beneath a carcass strewn wasteland

swirls still a quiet rebirth of Nature's cataclysmic stirring

knowing not its stretch's reach

only its need to sleep once again

mask covered courage wanders the landscape

dazed while sealing their final assessment to memory

preparing to dawn anew

to breathe tomorrow's winds made pure

knowing full well

life's perpetual cycle of wakeful bliss

is simply another sun filled respite

awaiting the lightening from beneath

For sleeping below

the thunderous bells of Time's molten belfry

await the high noon of its restlessness

the moment when its resonance

can no longer be contained

Still

Listening to their breath

a people finds the inner whisper

beckoning into silence

the anguish of loss

Remembering there is a still point

to their turning world

that place where neither time or space exists

only the invisible acceptance of oneness

Peace

We live on a dangerous planet. In the fullness of time, these lives will be as the dust in the worn-out bones of hundreds of millions.

I once spent my Thanksgiving weekend driving up the Northern California coast. At one cold and windswept lonely beach I observed surfers in the violent breakers offshore. After a while, I realized they weren't humans in black wetsuits at all, but sea lions or seals that were playing in the surf as though it were their home… Which it is.
