If Only...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The world does change, albeit slower than technology would have us believe. However, man’s ability to change, even obviate experience, there will remain his innate "weakness of will" remaining a slow evolving mystery throughout life until death--with usually no butler to blame it on. And then there are some of us who believe everything is perfect just the way it happens.

If only...

playground-dares had not happened

listening had gathered teachers' intent

books appeared earlier as friends

one had seen the pitch breaking

refused that last drink

understood infatuation

seen manipulation behind the eyes

avoided emasculation

risen to that inner voice

If only...

And now

forks in the road

beckon last hurrahs

upon tear glistened pavements of travel

tempting regrets never forgotten

a challenge to speed away from

journeys oft traveled

decisions all past

results undeniable

Perfection?

Mistakes?

If only...

One had perceived life differently

regrets would appear normal

for some perhaps

for others?

Provacative - if only the Big Bang mistake had not slipped through the Great Chemist's fingers the universe would still be perfect. Well done!

Much food for thought. “For there but for fortune…” If only I had… Leads me to think about decisions made that have brought me to this place. Yes, I might have been better off had I done other things, but hindsight is 20-20. For now, I am content with the things the way they are. My expectations are great, especially where renewable energy and stem cell research are involved. If I had been born in 1920, I would not have lived long or had the just-in-time technology that has sustained me and my health for so long. For that I am grateful, but the future is much brighter. Not only for me, but for everyone. At least, if we don't we waste our youthful attributes on wasteful behavior.

Well written. if only ... we weren't the way we are ! Or the journey had been easier - but there again that's not life I guess. Thought provoking.

Odin, you have selected premium situations to color this writing. "seen manipulation behind the eyes" is a great one! So is "risen to that inner voice" -- I like that you use 'risen' instead of 'listened,' as risen carries a stronghold image of invitation and worthiness in it. Standing up from the crowd in this piece for me is the widening rings that spread from the weight of "If only.../One had perceived life differently/regrets would appear normal." Those lines are exuding a mental healthiness to die for. Thanks! ~~ Diana
