Candy Coated Nightmares

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

If only we could see the storms coming. Interesting. But would we move out of the way? 9 billion of these anxious minds (or facsimile) by 2050. That’s enough to depress one, if it weren’t for the reality of the absurd that will continue propagating for those of us who find satirical accidents entertaining. How do your suburbs treat you? So goes my reverie back to the "slam" days.

Candy Coated Nightmares
by Odin Roark

LA's San Fernando Valley compost bin
Flanked by mountain walls
Decomposition raging
Choked roads of sun-baked grid lock
Houses upon houses
Boxes piled unto boxes
Richer
Poorer
Fancier
Shittier

Drive by Reality

Poor eye the rich
Rich eye endless wants
Blood-bloated ticks of debt
Cruise side by side
Hummers on the run
Mercs right behind
Phony nails
Phony tans
Corporate coffee
Cute coffee
Strip mall yoga
Storefront Scientology
Think it
You can buy it

Parade you

Window display mannequins
Masquerading as humans
Bedecked in ugly clothes
Garish clothes
Compliments of the counter-slaves in China

Argue we might

Bad nightmares end
Candy coated ones linger
Their sweet taste addictive

I like the word Kate used for this: "provoking." I value being able to feel the powerful portrayal in these glimpses. The lense through which you viewed to write this was sans airbrush or filter. A reader seeing rawness through another's written words is a reader witnessing someone's admissible truth, all the more admissible if seen the same way to some degree by that reader. Yes.

Boy did you say a mouthful, there was no corralling the pen here, or the truth, you're right on track, yes and that's where we're heading, bless ya.

... and the irony is, we're all hunting down the dream while our self-driven routes take us past the shopfronts of those who have already died, perhaps, pursuing theirs. As long as we just keep going, we're one step away from the delusion and disappointment (often) of arrival. Hope and confidence keep us ahead of the game and optimistic that the "storms" will not destroy or even touch us. Nightmares of others keep us light on our feet, fuelled by the cocaine of our own sweet(er) dreams of escape. Whether in sweatshops in China or in bondage to commerce in LA, our fantasies revolve around similar drives and issues. Stimulating and provoking as always, Odin. xx
