When I'm Gone

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Writers often belong to families who forget or avoid reading the author’s work. I often wonder if there’s fear of discovery keeping them readerless.

When I’m Gone
by Odin Roark

Will you get to know me
When I’m gone

After endings evolve into
New beginnings
When questions cease to arise?

What is it about another’s presence
That so often dissuades inquiry?

What is it about knowing someone
Up to a point that signifies
Satisfies
Nullifies
And indemnifies against loss?

Is knowing someone
Dependent on personal experience
Or can a well-defined shadow
Unseable in the sometime harshness of light
Remain spirited beyond yesterday?

Perhaps
You’ll scour the dim attic sanctum
Discover dusty boxes
Sealed up retrospect
Where passion’s shadowlight still ablaze
Has remained unread for so long

I hope you’ll get to know me
When I’m gone
For absence is but a convenience
Available to those seeking forgetfulness

many families do as you say and it is to bad because it is they who miss knowing that special place of the writer

You seem a bit young, Odin, to be so concerned about immortality. Yet you have given it far more thought than most and maybe that is what being remembered requires. Is this poem a treasure map which promises even greater riches in the attic sanctum? An El Dorado, Atlantis, Paradise? If so, it is a time proven path to future myth and fame. One of your best works.

That "dim attic sanctum" might be too much to handle for those who lack the madness (at least in my case) to drive creativity. Perhaps for those unfortunates, absence is a survival mechanism....

Lots of plays on words and contradictions here that suggest you've taken us for a ride down a murky road where we meet ourselves coming back. The last time I forgot to avoid doing something, I did it. My god, this is driving me sane!

Hi Odin,
Your feelings were nicely framed in an very expressive poetic song.
We don't really know how people will really react when we are gone...

WELL DONE!

God bless,

I like "Where passion’s shadowlight still ablaze
Has remained unread for so long"

I fear my 'relatives' responses to my poetry, and so don't promote It; my soul is one of so many..

talk about hitting the nail on the head, Odin;
those last two lines are simply perfect.
Yes!
