Candles Never Lit

With so many ideas worth personifying, the candle holds seemingly infinite possibilities.

Candles Never Lit

Wicks held captive
Or perhaps
Protected
Embryos held in tethered limbo

What shall the flame's first breath be
Beneath a citadel of worship
A first birthday
A stealth venture into the attic
An exploration through one's innate catacombs
Experienced alone

Life's simple tool made company
Exploring rooms of discovery
A comfort-place of isolation
Where one's dreams
One's fears
Remain ever faithful to light's purpose

For just as birth bears but singular reality
So too the limpid string
Encased in its molten nativity
Made hard
To last
Is used
As the grounding
The tool enabling serene freedom

Glimmer's heat
Radiance flickering
One's ethereal passion
Seeks no object to burn
No identity to possess
But solely to be

The candle's flame
But for imagining
Dreams of no restrictions
Just as the child sees everything as natural
Just as the shimmer of what can be
Is
Except for those who...

Only beholden to the consent
Of one's creativity
One's willingness to burn fully
Then accept the dimming
For the moment
Having expended its full radiance
For now
But remaining ever ready for the next lighting

How sad
Those boxed candles never lit
Knowing never of their purpose

when i was a boy we lit small votive candles
on the evening of January 5th, one for each member
of the family prsent and absent and the first candle to go out
meant that person would be the first to die - a ritual (in essence)
now long gone but it made a deep impression on a young boy at the time and your work here, Odin, resonates with me in a parallel way

this is fine indeed

I love this: "Seeks no object to burn/No identity to possess/But solely to be." So much sensitivity in recognizing the waste of the unlit candle. The candle does hold infinite possibilities, and it is an element most can afford to bring into their life. It's beautiful. The candle. Your poem. ~~ Diana

The lowly candle, a necessity in times past, now relegated to boxes until the “right” occasion presents itself, is open to metaphor, as is life.

We shall never know the purpose of boxed candles until they are lit.

I stopped at the market and bought two candles, an obedient husband was I. And while waiting to pay added a candy bar to hold my hunger at bay. The cashier eyed the items and me, then said so thoughtfully, "Hmmmm. Snickers by candlelight, I see, what a romantic guy!" Poets are every where, thought I, why can't one reside in me?

But also glad, that potential you mentioned - a light to guide the next conscious entity - as you so often are ...
