Ruminations for the species inventing Time.

Poem Artwork
Time's Birthday
by Odin Roark

How daunting it must be
Choosing a celebratory date

Invention adrift
Save the blue veined appendages
Holding firm the drift of time
Like a floating surreal image
Making its way up 5th Avenue
On Thanksgiving Day

How buoyant Time
Yet arguably ungrounded
Measuring not how life will continue
But only how existence has passed

Each year
Month
Week
Day
Hour
Minute
And second
An ancestral funeral
Survived only by tomorrow's unknown

A system invented to archive
Circuitous syndromes
Man-made phobias
Moment by moment reality
Representing synchronous movement
Rhythmically evaporating into
The ethereal collaborative
The indeterminate character of eternity
The immeasurable
Unfathomable
Moment that is now
No wind-up needed

Still Time insists on benchmarks
Symbolic definitions
The behind and ahead of calendars
Noted by way of bell-ringing
Clock-chiming
Sun rising and setting

Unlike us
Time's validation
Knows not culinary vices
Ice cream and cake
Champagne and caviar
And those other accouterments
Hauled out to attest
Our superior intellect

Noisemakers and confetti

I thought of Bill Murray in "Ground Hog Day" as I read.

For me, work, the same thing, the same time, home, to start all over again, schedules attended too, yet yearly made again...

Run fast the race Odin, for time has no end!

You always make me think Odin, I forget about time when I read your paintings...

Enjoying the paperwork!

A most thought provoking piece.

Timely observed annotations elude most memorable mementos, but time itself might stand at attention were it not so aptly adumbrated, enumerated, and askance-eyed... estuaries of innumerable accolades could not assize the adroitness of your panopliant poetic plaintive lament, Odin. I side with E. Phillips (and surely the E. must be for Erudite!) when he says it may well have been over analyzed... but speaking from one over analyst to another: nothing quite beats a good couch for a turn of phrase, and one good turn deserves ten thousand more... well couched, my friend.

Time is the universal parameter we can measure most accurately, yet we know the least about. It is a riddle, wrapped in a paradox, and enclosed by an enigma. Even the brilliant mind of Stephen Hawking could not unravel it as well as you have. Perhaps it has been over analyzed.

We are indeed, slaves to time. There are no primitive tribes that don't have some way of keeping track of time, however crude. If we really did celebrate time's birthday, it would be quite the celebration!
