Poem Artwork
Reflection the Deceiver
by Odin Roark

Beware that which looks back at you--
Mirrors reflect something solid,
Something capable of activating
The physics of mirrored reflection.

But…

Is that the one standing there,
Maybe even lying there,
(That so often fantasized version of ourselves, Vegas fashion.)
The mirror of cloning physicality
Wanting so passionately to make us see,
To realize the real image
The unbridled honesty of…
Giving us hives
WTF is that me?

How often do we play games?
C’mon.
For most of our adult lives, some would admit.

Yet

There are a few out there,
Knowing the game,
Determine to beat the game.

How?

Slipping under the radar
Of their own guilt.
Yeah.
There’s where the deception grows,
Or readies for harvest
Your choice.

Guilt.

Such an amorphous non-entity,
Infecting so many who,
Like me,
Like you,
Gape at its power.

But…

Guilt is but lesson material
To wake up,
To see mistakes.
Bad decisions as,
Well…
Growing the hell up.

So…

Let’s join hands,
Accept we’re just an extension
Of ancient primordial ooze,
And smile together
As all conscious beings must.
We’re screwed.

Remember,

Like the cliché that makes
Everyone feel so damn comfortable,
We’re together,
Void of those dastardly singular reflections
Embracing the collective acceptance,
The undeniable reflectance of reality
Our nemesis, the anomaly of confusion
So amorphous and anxious to please.

Okay,

I won’t say it again,
Except this once
We’re *#.*&* together.

What a mash up image that is.
Perhaps the perfect resolve,
The elixir ingested as truth
For those who can take it.

Mirror mirror on the wall,
Who’s the most fraudulent
Of us all?

I so like your fascination with mirrors, Odin. This poem spins up a parallel universe kind of feeling for me. What really grabs me in this piece are these two lines which augment the meaning one to the other: "Void of those dastardly singular reflections/Embracing the collective acceptance." That translated to me into us being able to see our image as 'all of us, not just me.' "WTF is that me?" -- a short line that drew a very wide smile. Thank you ~~ Diana

I don't look in the mirror very often because I don't like to see what age is doing, but I'm told that I look better than that image, so that's a consolation.

As for seeing something that is really not me, something I'm hiding, I don't see that. I'm told that my writing is a reflection of me. if that is so, then I'm out there for everyone to see and I have no qualms about that.

It seems to me that this theme was expressed in that old tale, Cinderella.

There is always the odd man out, at least so it seems, well ranted, Odin, bless ya.

...hard to endorse nihilism passing itself off as realism in the name of ravaging surrealism passed off as fantasy wrapped up in profanity, an attitude that dooms all with the same brush and its broad strokes spell j-a-d-e-d... but like your rant, that's just one man's opinion, Odin... Hope your day is going better than this poem suggests it may be.

Roger
