Poem Artwork
The Moment
by Odin Roark

Is there a moment?
Have you been waiting all your life
For that moment?

Transcendence knows well
The drip of ice
The fragrance of gardenia
The modulation of Brubeck
The splattering genius of Pollock

How spacious the choice
How reluctant the pursuit
Fear knows even better
Our fending off possibilities

Yet

Somewhere inward
Everyone knows the key
Hesitant perhaps
Who after all
Looks forward to the unknown

But

At some point
When all else fails
When stuff
Glory
Money
Love’s starvation accepted
Senses awaken

Like the moment our child-ness
First touches a rose petal
Only to marvel at the color
The aroma
The horn-stemmed protection
The willingness to embrace
It all

Such is the moment
So remote to most
Beyond cherished innocence
Once owned

For too many

Now thought as consolation prize
For working the system
For surviving the challenge
For unknowingly urging the missteps
That maintained your inherent child

big bucket lists? maybe at some point the status quo is okay. How many boats can you water ski behind after all? to look forward to something kinda keeps you going though, doesn't it?

...momentous reveries swerve towards the verities inherent in the mishap of happenstance and the irratic errata that engenders genius in an altogether musing mischance designed to make magic of the emerald we call poetry and tease us all out of the tedious tawdry seconds of banal thought until we come face to face with the originality we readers of fine verse like this like to call 'finesse'... finis.

"Beyond the cherished innocence once owned"... I don't think I can go beyond that point. My happiness is a flower that always blooms in a moment of innocence, never lost.

Such an interesting reflection, I like the way you listed
"The drip of ice
The fragrance of gardenia
The modulation of Brubeck
The splattering genius of Pollock "

To touch the moment is to know it. This poem seems pregnant with possibilities. M.True

In our urbanized routines with instant communication, multitasking from our highly structured preschool through locked in retirement making sure that our children are still sucking on the tit, we are missing out on the moments of our lives.

Beautifully expressed…
