Ironed Shadows

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As our broom-stick holiday comes once again, today's "grownup" world of year-round masks and costumes begs the simplest of memories remain the guardian-shadows for our survival.

Poem Artwork
Ironed Shadows
by Odin Roark

Her hands lay smooth
the coveralls worn thin
now wrinkled
once charged with earth

Mended armor from
courageous prices paid
embossed with crosshatched mending
stands raised in triumph

A home plate remembered
by innocence long abandoned
players made humble from
a boy's first slide for life

Vapors rise
from sprinkled droplets of water
beneath handled hot steel
making ready once more
the crusted wafer-thin reason
for kneeling to non-questioned answers

Facing coerced submission to other games
a purple-robed relentless hand
feeds rewards from gilded plate
accompanied by whispering silver tongue

Such are the scoring points of yet another kind

Youth's pure white
once starched crisp
ever ready for combat
now labors thread bare
atop shoulders and arms
riding the reach for caramel-lathered memories
chased down with silver chaliced promises from still wider mouths

Where goes the love-smooth ironing hand now?

Costumes of rumpled thread
made anew by hot-pressed caresses
now like the ether of memory
drift up past the seeing eyes into untethered emptiness

Tread carefully
lest you become wrinkle-free expediency
sliding voraciously into digital home plates
forever kneeling faithfully before promised obsolescent rewards
delivered smilingly from reflective platters
tarnishing quickly

I see the wican, one with the mother, earth. I see the priest preparing another ritual for the fools who follow every word blindly, accepting empty promises. Memories of innocence never to be repeated. When I read this, these are the things that just pop into my mind. I waited then went back reread it, same thing. Whether it is correct or not does not matter to me for I enjoy what I am visualizing.

There is a lot of irony when we look back at simpler times, fading in the shadows of time. My mom sewed patches on my school shirts where buttons torn out made holes as playground bullies grabbed my shirt and ripped buttons off by the dozen--never to catch me, ever.

So, shall the costumes mask despots or make superheros of children? If pretending is the game, then who among us would not consent to play? It's the devil in the details that marks the difference. M.True

I liked the interchangeable masks you brought to the surface in this finely written poem, Odin. The juxtaposition of different faces, with one maintaining itself throughout the poem was very well articulated through words on the monitor instead of vocal. The effect was stunning.
