With so many ways to evaluate one’s choices, why not existential card games?

Poem Artwork
5-Card Destiny
by Odin Roark

Worn card handling
Delivers solace
Knowing snapped dealing
With its own sound
Renders some voices honest
Others but an outcry of defiance
Longed for comfort
Courtly faces
Or
Numbered challenges
All the same
In the game of remembering

Beginners playing chance
Obliging destiny
An often painful revealing
Even as
Everyone takes a peek
Asks for more
Or
Stays pat

Destiny laughs

In the game of remembering
So often played with chance
Begetting more losers
Than winners
All rising from the table
Some call the life game
Dress their wounds
Walk out the door

While winners
Gush with this moment’s victory
Delude themselves as immortal
Strut out the door

Away from the dealings
On the cold nights
With the winds at 5 knots
Life’s inclement weather raging

Winners and losers
Drink the same bourbon
Long for the same elusive love
Game play can’t deliver

Ever notice

Some never walk away from the table

I'm one of those takes a peek (peak?) at the cards. I telegraph and am a bad card player, so I have to walk away from from the table.

Oh yes, I most certainly have noticed the fact that winners and losers are forever stuck there at that table. I was too for so many years. Happy to say I am no longer looking for that one special card in life's game. I have become the dealer and the cards are marked.

He who lives in a house of cards should never shake the table. And in the end the house always wins... I preferred the slots. M.True

Whether it's the lure of the pat hand of cards or the patting hands congratulating and lauding an outstanding effort, there are always ties that bind... severing them can seem a cut unkind, but relationships like card decks must sometimes be cut as much to prevent those who deal from the bottom of the deck from stacking a hand as to preclude a bottomless sense of obligatory oblations from obviating or obscuring an obdurate sense of self... some cut and run, others like me prefer long, lingering goodbyes, tinged with nuance, honeyed with the bittersweet vestiges of vitriol and vitality... we all value our games, and the joker, too, has his place, because a wild card is friend to everybody... keep smiling, Odin! You'll beat the house yet.
