Poem Artwork
Forwarding Address
by Odin Roark

Don’t forget to make out the postal card
‘Cause when you’re there
You’ll want all those
Parcels
Mail
Flyers
New phone books
And the precious junk mail

You’ll take your body
That burden you carry about
Of noticeable change
Avoiding mirrors

The one
Whose insides
Woven between brittle bones
Know muscle atrophy
Blood vessel collapse
Bowels contraction-in-waiting—again
Kidneys dreading more martinis
Heart and lungs wondering
WTF gimme some air
Some living blood
Et al

But still

You’ll drag your weary ass
Down the walk
Lick your lips
Open the lid
And voila

Postbox full of…yeah
Junk mail
Just like the good ol’ days
Back at the house
Before the damn retirement scam
Got your attention

C’mon
At least the complex has postboxes galore

What would it be like
With no daily stroll
To check for a card
A letter
A brown-wrapped gift?

It’d be like
The final reality

No need for
A forwarding address

Ever again

If a picture is worth a thousand words
for the first time ever, you've met your match! :)

Reminds me of my mother who sorts through thousands of pieces of junk per year. I think it actually gives her something to look forward to. I relish days with no mail to go through myself. Of course I'm not retired as yet. Now the clog seems to be in my email. I wonder what the protocol would be with email when you die? Perhaps some forethought before the final departure? In my deathbed I would have the sudden thought...oh my! I must close out my email account. Or perhaps it will just go on and on without me till...hopelessly clogged, it dies the death of no more space...Perhaps I should make a special note in my will? This one got me thinking Odin. Bob

Most profound! Did you write this while waiting an hour in line at the post office? UPS to the rescue! Great holiday subject, even the cards come by email now... M.True

Another brilliant piece showing the inevitability of life. The photograph is so poignant with all the unwanted mail simply dumped on the ground rather than carried back to a lonely existence without any real mail at all. And the idea of a "retirement scam" it's deep in the heart of many elderly who fall for rosy pictures that turn into sour grapes.

On the Internet, I am flooded with junk email, but get very few real messages from friends and family. I have to assume that they are too busy to write. Otherwise I would worry too much that they don't care about me anymore. That's why I make it a point to write to people whenever I can because I know they appreciate it, especially the elderly.

Yep. Uh huh.
I'm there . . . in spades . . .
