Coming Or Going Not

Perhaps each precious moment is truly all there is.

Coming Or Going Not
by Odin Roark

Such might be the way
Where bearings
Like yin and yang
Energize one another

How early we pick goals
Paths seems endless
We start
Yet quickly find interest off course

Amidst the untraveled choices
We find flower-covered tundra
Unexpected ruts
Fissures beneath
Deep recesses of chance
Unchartered lessons

Part way
We question
Go East
West
Ascend
Descend

At some point
The vortex of decision
Swirls our sense of harmony
We panic as if to stumble
Only to find
Without submitting to the precarious
We learn not our balance

We ask
Without such equanimity
Can the markers ever be ignored?

To be consummate
That sense of not needing
To be coming or going
Where all signposts are faceless
Is to know one’s true heading
The being in exquisite sync
With the now

Once again you have brought to light one of life's great quandaries. As we travel life's course we can either have a marked course or let serendipity decide which way to go. Either choice has its pitfalls. Somehow we must blend the two if we are to have a happy, successful life.

You are in a wonderful place right now, Odin, central to all of the seven cardinal directions - north, south, east, west, up, down and where you stand.

Your eloquent words are echoed in the rhetoric of a great teacher who told us just one year before he was cut down by an assassin's bullet of the "fierce urgency of now."

Hah! I spent two lost decades following unmarked, uncharted roadsigns and piss poor thought processes to go along with them. Easily discouraged, scurrying from one disaster to the next until finally I ran out of myself to go on. Stopped down the drugs, held onto to the sour mash, and climbed ever so slowly out of my needful life and began my giving one.
