Traveled (revisited)

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

It seems so easy to take for granted the seasonal changes, but concern for climate change, small or large as man's impact may be, we must remain conscious that our innate solipsistic narcissism is not something our aesthetic nature can ignore...try as we might. May the journey never end.

Poem Artwork
Traveled
by Odin Roark

Once traveled
looking back is a
smoke-filled window.

Once traveled
the smoky windows rattle their endless resentment
at the windy changes.

But...The changes
rattles
smoky windows
oh, how sweet their receding motion.
oh, how sweet to breathe the air of the uphill movement
of struggling roots
of rustling branches
of open spaces crying to be filled

with visions
with excavations of the mind
with tempestuous truth
with directions into endless detours
with paths...trails...roads...
roads to be once again...

Well, I had to employ a second dictionary (from Merriam-Webster to American Heritage) for solipsistic, but now I really like that word. This "Traveled" fills me with the idea of 'freshness,' of 'open-ness,' of 'energy.' Excellent 'coming to life' poem. ~~ Diana

At the risk of being far off, I remember that my father had to routinely, once a week, wash the interior windows of his cars because he smoked. The smoke of my childhood lead to many diseases that young children today do not have to suffer. There are smoke signals everywhere of our disservice to the planet that we must heed if we are to survive to the next century. As poets and dreamers of the way it was and the way it should be, it is our duty to raise the alarm. After all, if Rachel Carson had not written Silent Spring, our national symbol, the Bald Eagle, and many other birds, may have become extinct.

As I sadly travel around these days, I can't help but notice that our societal narcissism seems to be growing, ever more.

I know we all must travel our own journeys, but I don't understand why the smokey windows would rattle with resentment at every change. Oh well.... I thought every kind of change was supposed to be for the better. No?
