Snake Oil Free Speech
by Odin Roark

Listen close
Here’s what’s going to happen

This is where the rubber leaves the road
The father gripping the wheel
The mother with Coleman cooler at her feet
Beach towels and blankets on her lap
Clueless children in the back seat
Smart-phone-games dumbing down consciousness

You’ll be cruising into the sunset
A barren swamp peppered countryside receding
As oncoming ocean depth
Reflects your personal blood-red sky

All the evil will vanish
As you leave the highway
Slip and slide the sandy road
Dodge beer cans and mistake’s exhausted condoms
Coming suddenly to destination’s end

Your transport will cough its last fumes of gas
Your seat’s cushy-springs will explode
Like coiled serpents in waiting
As icy breath clouds evil-singed windows

Welcome to your Last Stop Beach
Swollen with humanity’s layered dead-cell cake
Iced over with slathered Coppertone delusions
Past attempts at escape
Now but flotsam washed ashore

You’ll try to remain calm
But your virtual-arcade will quickly drown
Along with my Sunday morning radio voice
Gurgling a personal salvation promise
Just for you

And that’s what’s going to happen
The final waves will disappear your sorry lives
Until the awaited day of resurrection
For he told me so

Gargantuan poem, Odin. I was on the edge of my edge reading this. Pinpoint glare crackles off the page here, handled with such brilliant compose in those first two lines, which grab reader attention by the short and curlies, and then immediately unleashes the kraken. Jeez oh man, I am flattened by this excellence. Whatever impetus lit this fire, it was powerful, shooting energy through the piece with words like: "gripping, blood-red sky, vanish, cough explode, coiled serpents, disappear your sorry lives." Astounding. ~~ Diana

Some sixty years ago on a barren (except for fiddler crabs and sea oats) Anna Maria Island beach, I came across an umbrella opened in the white sand. Under it was a beach towel and on the towel was the corpse of a 3 foot sand shark wearing sun glasses. Not a soul was around. The 'installation art' was just for me. I never quite enjoyed rivers and coastlines afterward. Your poem, Odin, just might explain why.

Yes and biblically perfect, too. In today's news, recent flooding has left the San Antonio River banks lined with trash that, fortunately, did not make it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. I understand that NYC just goes out with barges and dumps it in the ocean so that it will become New Jersey's problem.

We certainly are headed for a reckoning, let's hope that we come to our senses before it becomes the scenario you describe.

Brilliant and pessimistically perfect!
