Coulda Shoulda Woulda (revisited)

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

How easy it is for some of us to forget our humanity, caught up as we are in the “Gotta look successful, appear above it all” syndrome, even at the expense of being pathetic with our behavior. (Image by openwalls)

Poem Artwork
Coulda Shoulda Woulda
by Odin Roark

I passed a man on his bike
pulling the cart where sat the mongrels,
his sign flapping in the wind,
its strings about to break,
faded letters imploring
I'm broke and in the dog house,
his smile belying the flat tires
carrying him past my eyes
that shoulda seen enough to stop.
I had two dollars fully inflated.

I walked ‘til the tall grass moved,
the mouse was frozen,
the cat waited body slung low,
the moment near.
I shoulda clapped,
a simple yell would do,
but I ignored the life once running,
now only a final gasp,
as tail disappears beneath whiskers.

I stood at checkout,
my basket rainbowed by fruit and wine,
my impatience waned
as she wept and started to leave,
her credit over used,
her groceries to be restocked.

I coulda reached.
I didn't need the wine.

Tomorrow I'll wake,
let beads of water wash away the
shouldas,
couldas,
towel myself dry,
note another hair in the sink,
squeeze shut my eyes,
and don yet another day
of cloth adorned nakedness.

Later I'll walk,
looking again for wouldas,
as my fingers roll
fuzz balls deep in my pockets,
hoping to better my ways,
learn how to survive myself.

It may be the brevity of the moment, and we, too set in our ways not to be taken by surprise. Pressing decisions every one, none to be considered lightly. Followed by an unsympathetic sigh once the moment has passed. A not-so subtle hint to the rest of humanity. M.True

I love the photo. image and the poem. One must learn to swim well in this sea of life. The good swimmers are the ones that win.

We all have those moments where action may change things. If we freeze or walk away, we have missed an opportunity to do something good, especially for the underdog. I really loved the imagery and the guilt that surfaced after the fact.

There is much we see around us that can move us to write. Gosh! Everything really for the inquisitive. It seems much of your work, Kent, has ekphrastic elements to it. Not so much the writer interpreting a work of visual art as it is the writer allowing what bombards his senses, and intellect, a brief moment of poetic rendition.

Some people may be set off-balance by certain elements of skepticism, or brief stabs at more complicated issues, or the brooding ill humor that (at times) permeates certain insights. Not me. Your honest unvarnished clean-wood approach excels past so much of the (me-centered) poetic construction in a seriously over-glutted genre. Incidentally, Michele and I watched 'Kingdom' again last weekend. He emotes well.

Fine work, BKB. Really like the mysterious, swimming through blacktop, rhythm in this.
Peace to you...
