Red Nosed Circus

It’s been a raucous week on Capital Hill, reminding many that beasts are sometimes born—but mostly made. (Image AP Scalise and McCarthy)

Poem Artwork
Red Nosed Circus
by Odin Roark

Under the big top
They contort, impersonate, tumble,
Wire walk, trapeze flip and juggle hats.
How clever cheer the gullible,
That audience of thirsty throats
Impatient for bloodletting,
The finale promise of every performance,
When lions are whipped into frenzy,
Causing patrons to shout for blood,
Any blood,
Caring not from whom,
Doubting never they’re right.

Such antics these,
Thriving on hostile billboard delusions,
Even as a 5 week break finds them kissing babies,
Petting dogs, glad-handing admission donors,
Grabbing photo-ops of deceit,.
All the while believing detection-proof is forever.

Truthful headlines are never subtle.
Beware the 80 point type, “Lions Escape,”
For the growls defying their captor’s lies
Is anger to be reckoned with.

Before returning to the bright lights,
Leaving behind leisure lounging at poolside,
Ice cubes melting in lead cut crystal
Know diluted bourbon portends what’s ahead.
That stepping back into center ring
May be hazardous venturing.

The lions are waiting.
Back into the cages,
Not an option.

Comparing Congress to the Circus and the lion's den is apropos. For those that rise in politics, buffoonery trumps conscientious action. Money speaks louder than dissent.

In defense, many choices are difficult and not easily resolved. Hence, their delay. For instance the question of our southern border and immigration reform, warned about many years ago in the brilliant book by Paul and Anne Ehrlich along with Loy Bilderback, The Golden Door (1981).

When I look at the issue myself I am torn by the solution. One part of me wants to throw everyone back that tries to cross the border. Another side of me wants to show compassion for children used as pawns. There is no easy compromise for the problems of overpopulation and poverty driving people to the United States in an ill-conceived Hollywood thought that they will be better off.

Politicians, like rabid dogs, always bear watching. That's why I always wonder how most people can feel good about not paying attention to current politics and the health of our great republic. Come election time there are a significant amount of voters who are always low information and couldn't tell you the name of their representative or who is speaker of the house. The public should always watch these politicians (crooks) and be aware of what kind of crap they're spewing. The media aren't any better with their preference for one party over the other. Someone who observes carefully can end up making a wiser choice than someone who doesn't.

ya hit a nerve there. It is a circus Odin. Bob

A well-sustained analogy, Odin; it's a wonder such rather large arses (let alone noses!) can fit on those wobbly little circus stools anymore. What's more, my head is literally aching wondering just who the (global) Big Top Ringmaster is these days, let alone who's cracking the whip. When's it feeding time? Always mind-expanding, thank you.
