Celebritydom's Napalm

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

As an election year heats up and the role of leadership falls prey to the most money and egregious persuasions the country has ever experienced, science and governing struggles with the task of caretaking the planet amidst the controversy of distrust. As respite, we have the idolatry of Hollywood preparing for another Emmy Awards as the summer film rollout of blockbuster mediocrity continues. Such begs the often acerbic question: is aspiring to create something of honest worth a noble quest or a subterfuge for something else?

Poem Artwork
Celebritydom’s Napalm
by Odin Roark

Consider the future’s past
where mediocrity bedecked in sequin and silk
once resided hidden within their bubble of out-of-control flames.

Suddenly the blaze of new champions,
the opportunistic minds scampering to upstage a colleague,
be it science, literature, medicine or politics,
becomes engulfed by celebrity napalm,
that historical celebration of scathing sears,
the winks and smiles of contempt
as they take center stage
adoring the cacophony of camera shutters,
the roiling flash of attention.

Should we pity those who strut their iconic core of misanthropy,
blinded by narcissism,
embracing solipsistic intoxication
and ignoring basic responsibility,
or should we content ourselves with disregard
as they but seed tomorrow’s constituency
of audience malaise?

Might ignoring the natural law mandating respect and good will
be to encourage the ignorant and gullible,
unknowingly fanning egoist flames with fuels of indifference?

Is it not true that we are all intrinsic components of the One?

Have we succumbed to the smoke and stench of the stygian incendiary,
that once perpetually struggling reality of nutrition and rebirth,
now but a napalm scorched landscape?

As readers, listeners and observers
of masquerading pilots of persuasion,
we continually gasp for purity of air,
clarity of reason and the simple ability
to once again trust the comfort of innocence.

Yet…

To hold to what ought to be,
we find ourselves sitting quietly
surrounded by the iconic reality of grand personage,
we think and ask: Are they really the Them,
or are we too becoming but drones in waiting,
our own pilotless slave, soundlessly drifting astray
as we reach for our share of contentment, happiness…
and celebritydom?

Now but a napalm scorched landscape,
Now becoming drones in waiting,
Now becoming pilotless slaves,
Now soundlessly drifting astray.

Now all so sadly true, for far too many today. And now, I very sadly doubt that we will wake up before it's too late.

All may dream of some kind of fame but I think only the foolish would wish for celebrity-status; to me, the latter conjures the manufactured hype that is not based in the truth of the person but on the projections of the masses heaped upon the unlucky individual - ultimately the napalm that consumes and destroys him/her. Even on a small scale, you become the 'thing' that you are known for and how dissatisfying is that when so many of us are dealing with fictitious constructs all of the time? Wanting to succeed in what we aspire to nobly create is probably all the success we need if we come even near to achieving that; but, if it's merely a vehicle to become famous then perhaps we get what we deserve and should be open-eyed about its consequences.

Just like sudden riches, celebrity is a two-edged sword. So as not to split hairs, all I will say is that some handle it well and others do not. Hence we tend to honor the deranged, drugged, and suicidal over the "boring" as you put it, more mundane and long life troopers who die peacefully in their beds with whatever 15 minutes of fame they had firmly and the real world.

What we have to pass on to young people is encouragement for doing things well and being good, not for being the center of attention. Once we do that our children will be prepared for celebrity if it comes, and will not go out in flaming glory like so many.
