For some of us, there is more time than others to explore the possibilities after death. For others, there’s but the moment rapidly approaching made finite by fear.(Image by caras ionut)

Imagined Body Exit
by Odin Roark
He lay in hospital
What lies beyond?
Clouds
Angels,
Pearly Gates,
Or…
Leaving the body
He surmises is…
Imaginative?
Perhaps an understatement,
For without weight and limbs,
As many picture the ethereal,
Gravity would be irrelevant,
Yes?
Might there be but floating?
He considers.
Or is there fusion,
A merging of existence
A finding of coalescence within a… something,
Or is there but a long journey into the void,
Awaiting the circumstantial attachment,
A finding of use perhaps forever alive
In that yet discovered place,
That yet imagined after death relay?
Such fills the waning hours of sustained life
Kept manifest by tubes, wires, and the incessant sounds
Those beeping measures of life
Counting down to the inevitable moment
When breath’s closure
Brings cessation to the sentiment of specie superiority.
The body exit…
Perhaps but another beginning
We’ve never imagined.
As an existentialist, I'm spending my time on this side of death with no contemplation of what comes after my light is extinguished or even disabled where I am merely hooked up to devices and by brain no longer has any cognitive thought. Time to turn out the light and say good night.
