As ISIS continues to foment war’s violence and barbarous intimidation, one can only wonder what it must be like.

The Final Wait
by Odin Roark

The village air is filled with bistro’s aroma,
The morning’s first brew.
The old man’s first cup.

Sitting at his sidewalk table,
He breathes deeply
The dawn’s fresh air.
He sips.
He knows it’s coming.

His eyes turn south.
From the hills,
It will appear, and…

Still the sun continues to rise.
Sparrows wait at the bakery door.
Crumbs are good.
Always good.

He waits.

Next door,
A father and uncle
Deliver the newlyweds’ finished chair,
A craft of love,
Its coating of shellac,
Sparkles in the sun’s reflection.

Across the street,
An old battle scarred bicycle
Rests chained to the light pole,
Rusty links still loyal.

Its young owner works atop the building
Repairing his grandmother’s sagging clothesline posts,
Eyes darting from hammer and nail to the south.

With windows closed everywhere,
Sealing in what air remains fit to breathe.
The bakery’s gaily painted door bursts open.
A white aproned girl dashes out,
Her panicked eyes to the south,
She leans down, placing her hand on the cobblestones.

The boy on the roof
Careens down the stairs,
Jumps on his bike,
And like the girl,
Peers to the south.

On his second cup now,
The old man stares at the stone street
Vestige passage his grandfather helped build.
Soon, he knows,
The street will be rubble,
The air will be filled with acrid smoke,
Cries will be heard,
Executions will be piled,
Sorrow will be everywhere,
But for now…

The girl runs up to her mother’s embrace.
The boy bikes for home.
The sparrows fly to their nests.
The fluttering leaves hold their breath.
The street suddenly becomes quiet,
Save the clanging of church bell warnings.

As tank treads invade the cobblestone.
He places his revolver on the table.

The black flags darken the sunrise.

The wait is over.

And when the war with ISIS hits full swing, may the skies over the region become filled with thousands of drones that rain down missiles with deadly accuracy upon the heads of those hooded thugs until the last of them is burnt to a crisp.

A chilling depiction of the fate of those with no options. There is an eerie parallel to Hitler's brownshirts who fanatically terrorized the Germans into followership and eventually tried to exterminate the Jews in Europe.

Fortunately we are far more aware of even small incidents these days than we were when Hitler rallied the disaffected to his cause and blamed just the right people to cover his atrocities, sometimes unknown until much later, even after the war. The Arab Spring is alive and well in all the countries affected. It lies underground, like the French underground in World War II, waiting to strike out and destroy fanaticism on its own soil.

We, as observers, can do much to help the poor with no options, and are. Words like yours bring enlightenment along with reports from the front, either from smart phone videos on YouTube translated to English, or from the few brave reporters, some captured as hostages to terrorism, who venture into the fray, like they always have, revealing the true nature of fanaticism and what it brings.

There always seems to be a few, like I described in my poem, Alienation, who seem inclined to follow extreme, fanatical causes and devote their very lives to them, regardless of how stupid it may seem to us. I think that, like we did with Al Qaeda. Tactical strikes at the leadership will degrade the ISIS organization enough so that millions of lives will be saved and other millions will not live in fear of terrorism to come.

So horrendously tragic for far too many these days, in far too many places.

It's past time for the exterminator to fully arrive and deliver them to their 78 virgins or whatever is the prize they're seeking. These dark crimes they commit are some of the worst in history. If they are able to they will kill the whole world. Extermination is the only reply to crimes like these. I hope that there is the political will in the west to do what needs to be done. You are the first I've seen who has directly referred to this Odin. You've done it well. Bob
